Another view of Critical Mass

Critical Mass defies a neat definition. It is simultaneously revered, despised, and tolerated. Regardless of what you think about it, it’s important to remember that everyone does the ride for different reasons, and every city’s Mass has a different vibe. Here in Portland, our ride is completely civil and law-abiding. Cyclists and cops even have … Read more

Join us on the Super Legal Ride

Tonight is the Super Legal Ride created by super-advocate Elly Blue. The first one got some media attention (Portland Mercury and KGW-TV) and its goal and execution has come into question on the Shift email list. The debate revolves around whether or not it’s a good idea for cyclists to advocate for a new law … Read more

Brains and bikes at OMSI IMAX

An interesting movie is coming to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on March 6th. It’s called “Wired to Win” and according to the film’s website: “the film combines spectacular live-action footage with cutting-edge computer graphics and medical imagery to demonstrate how each brain responds to experience and challenge in ways we’re only … Read more

Nothing wrong with recumbents

Yesterday I had an earth-shattering realization: Recumbents are just bikes and the people that ride them are normal, friendly people. OK, I’m exaggerating a little…I never actually thought they’d be abnormal or mean or anything….it’s just that we all know how a certain stigma exists between ‘bent and upright riders. I have long been curious … Read more

CHUNK 666 ride report on napkins

Just noticed this interesting New Year’s Eve ride summary written on napkins by CHUNK chronicler, Silken. It’s sort of hard to read but I think this napkin (#3 of 5 in the series) says: “Later, Ian and his tallbike did a slow motion crash on Karli. She cried a lot but then drank a beer … Read more

“Super Legal Bicycle Ride” happens tonight

This just in from local biker Elly Blue: “The Super Legal Bicycle Ride will be a rolling demonstration of cyclists riding safely, courteously, and in compliance with all Oregon laws. We aim to show that current state laws hinder traffic flow when they require cyclists and motorists to behave identically. We will educate the public … Read more
