Job Title *
Lead Mechanic – Mobile Repair

Company/Organization *
SprocketFly

Job Description *
US: We are SprocketFly, a locally-owned company that delivers quality bike-repair service directly to our customers where they work and live. We pride ourselves on building fantastic relationships with our clients and spreading positive energy everywhere we go.

YOU: We are looking for a lead bike mechanic for regular work, including single bike tune-ups and 2- to 3-day repair events at our clients’ office locations. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is comfortable with working on all kinds of bikes, from cruisers to mountain to road bikes, vintage and modern. You must have an outgoing, can-do disposition and be willing to take responsibility and work directly with customers to meet their needs and educate them about their bike in a friendly, engaging way.

As lead mechanic, you will be compensated with a generous minimum salary and a share of the revenue from each event. Payment for events is proportional to the amount of service we deliver collectively as a team, and you’ll earn additional income as lead mechanic. Expect to work 3 or 4 10-hour days per week.

THE JOB: This is not your ordinary mechanic gig. Every repair is an adventure! You’ll be responsible for driving our mobile bike repair trailer–complete with all the tools and gear we need for a successful event—around Portland with your bike, within an 8-mile radius from our HQ (NE Sandy blvd. and 24th ave.)

Our typical gig is a 1-3 day tune-up event, where you will work on 5-15 bikes per day, often with 1 or 2 other mechanics (depending on the number of bikes) to make the work go smoothly.

Contact us to learn more, and visit http://www.sprocketfly.com to see the services we offer.

Cheers!

How to Apply *

We’d love to get to know you better. Please send an email to ben@sprocketfly.com with your resume and a short statement about why you would be a great fit as a lead bike mechanic.

Filmed by Bike starts tonight!

A big street party in the parking lot behind Velo Cult will kick off the 14th annual Filmed by Bike film festival tonight.

This isn’t just any party. There will be live performance art, a bike confessional storytelling booth, live DJs, a beer garden, group rides all over the place, a slow bike race, and who knows what else.

But beyond the fun is something even bigger: This is our film fest. A local, bike-inspired event that we should all be proud of (and support!). A testament to what’s possible when a city’s bike culture is hitting on all cylinders.

Filmed by Bike inspires and entertains people all over the globe with its unique collection of bike movies, and it’s also an amazing success story. It’s hard to believe this little event that northeast Portlander Ayleen Crotty dreamed up way back when is now one of the best and biggest events of the year. In the past few weeks I’ve seen headlines about it in the media all over town. Now that’s inspiring.

The Ride of Silence, a national day of rememberance for people killed and injured while bicycling, will be held in Portland on May 18th.

Portland has hosted one of these rides as far back as 2006 and is one of 321 cities hosting rides across 45 states. There are also rides planned in Corvallis and Medford. Portland’s ride is being organized by residents in the Arbor Lodge neighborhood who are still reeling after the crash that caused grave injuries to a local dad, Brian Duncan. Duncan was hit while trying to cross Rosa Parks Way at Delaware on March 30th.

According to local oranizer Nick Miller, the ride will meet at Arbor Lodge Park at 6:30 for a brief address where names of recent traffic victims will be read aloud.

Someone will also recite the official Ride of Silence poem which I’ve pasted below:

If we want the next generation to grow up with a fresh perspective on how we get around, then storytime is a powerful place to start. As a bike geek and dad of three I’m always on the lookout for fun children’s books that show cycling in a positive and fun light, so I was thrilled to hear about the City of Portland’s new “Bike to Books” initiative.

It’s a super-smart way to encourage more neighborhood biking and reading among kids.

Bike to Books is part of PDX Bike Month. Also in on the deal is Multnomah Country Library and Metro.

Here’s what they’ve put together: Everyone who bikes to the library will get a free bike light courtesy of Metro; PBOT’s marketing team will give out free bike maps and share family biking info; and the libraries will offer 18 bike-themed storytime sessions at branches throughout the city.

Next week’s ‘Better Broadway’ trial aims for better shopping environment

better broadway plan

(Images: Broadway-Weidler Alliance)

Nine months ago, one of the city’s top experts on the Lloyd District predicted to us that any changes to inner Northeast Portland’s main east-west arterial were 10 years away.

“I think people need to realize that Broadway doesn’t know what they want to do yet,” said Rick Williams, the founding director of the Go Lloyd business association, in an interview. “Broadway is kind of where we were 10 years ago: in the planning phase.”

But if an on-street trial next week of improved crosswalks and a protected bike lane do well, the planning phase could move pretty quickly.

Reminder: TriMet MAX repairs will cut service, crowd trains for two weeks

Grounds for repair on First Avenue.
(Photo: J.Maus/BikePortland)

As we reported last month, the next two weeks will be good times to bike or bus all the way to work rather than trying to get a bike on MAX.

That’s because MAX track and pavement repairs on First Avenue downtown that start on Sunday will scramble service on every line in the system, increasing wait times between trains by 25 to 35 percent and cutting system capacity 30 to 50 percent.

In short: good luck finding a free bike hook, or even squeezing your bike on the rush-hour trains at all.
