Walking the floor at last year’s PDX Bicycle Show.

The organizers of the five-year-old PDX Bicycle Show have announced that they’re pulling the plug on the annual event in the Portland Expo Center.

“Exhibitor Booth Registrations to date were lower than expected, so we have made a difficult decision to cancel the March show,” the organizing team wrote in a a statement on the website of parent company Pedal Nation Events. “All exhibitors who registered have been refunded 100%.”

With two weeks and change until the submission deadline for Portland’s all-bike film festival, a jury has been named and plans are taking shape for four days of creativity at the Clinton Street Theater in April.

Founding curator Ayleen Crotty said Friday that the festival may cross a new threshold this year: an epic. At least by festival standards.

“We’ll definitely have that focus on very short movies, but this year we are considering a feature-length film,” Crotty said of the 95-minute submission, which if it’s a contender would get its own night of screening. “It’s just good.”

27 questions about local biking this year (and only one is fake)

Bullshit 100 ride-24

Fun on Washington County’s back roads in August.
(Photos by J.Maus/BikePortland)

Predictions are for suckers. The trick to understanding the future isn’t trying to guess the answers, it’s knowing which questions to ask.

If only we always did. But for the last of this week’s new-year posts, let’s try.

Here’s a list of questions about Portland biking that will (we think) be answered by the year to come.

Bike lanes may help spur big changes at Lloyd Center Mall

The Lloyd Center Mall’s new owners are assembling plans that might remodel this parking garage to create a new street-friendly storefront opening onto Multnomah Street and Holladay Park.

The two-story parking garage that for 50 years has walled off Portland’s biggest mall could be in for change, people familiar with the plans say.

The Lloyd Center Mall’s new owners have hired a New York-based planning consultant to help imagine a new human-friendly entrance for the mall facing Multnomah Street, which Lloyd District landowners are redesigning as a major commercial corridor in the wake of a project that slowed auto traffic by replacing two general travel lanes with protected bike lanes.

From The Oregonian, Jan. 1, 1895: ‘Reign of the wheel’

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

An 1899 newspaper ad for a Portland bike shop, from a
presentation by local bike historian Eric Lundgren.

The first issue of The Morning Oregonian in 1895 included an article that holds up wonderfully well.

It was published one year before the first organized bicycle recreation association formed in Portland; two years before 800 local donors crowd-funded the city’s first dedicated bike path on North Williams and Vancouver Avenues; four years before Oregon governor-elect T.T. Geer bought a bicycle of his own and led the charge for road improvements through the state.

And 119 years later, this short case for the merits of biking still feels like the perfect way to kick off a year of progress.
