Last month we shared the story of Kinn Bikes, a new company that decided to make their frames right here in Portland. Now, another company has decided that Portland is the place to manufacture their bikes. Conscious Commuter Corporation, a company with offices downtown and in Los Angeles, just had a batch of 50 frames made at Zen Bicycle Manufacturing in North Portland.

We shared the launch of Conscious Commuter in June of 2011 and then caught up with them a few months later as they went public with their successful Kickstarter campaign (that raised over $25,000).

According to Bob Vander Woude, the company’s President and CEO, they were very close to producing the frames in China. “There were a lot of people in the industry telling us we had to manufacture in China or we wouldn’t be able to compete,” he told me via phone today. Vander Woude said they were all lined up for a trip to China to visit potential factories. “The more we thought about it,” he said, “It just really started resonating with our core principles,” Vander Woude said about the decision.

Hate? Really?

Slate.com has published a very interesting, and I think important, article on why some road users have such anger toward people on bikes. In Why You Hate Cyclists: Partly because of jerks like me. But it’s mostly your own illogical mind, writer Jim Saksa delves into the psychological underpinnings of why bike riders get such a bad rap. His article is a must-read if you want to better understand why we so often hear hate-filled rants about “those crazy cyclists!”

Here’s the gist:

Description: My beautiful Trek Blue 700WSD got stolen last night/this morning. I’m pretty certain it’s a 16″ because I am 5’4 and it fits me perfectly. I bought it 6 months ago and am trying to acquire a registration or ID number from the woman I bought it from now.

The thief left the front wheel and my U-Lock. My bike has black fenders, a bell, a back reflector light dock (without the actual light since it’s detachable) and my right break was not working when it got stolen, something was wrong with the break cable and it was visible. Someone else’s bike got stolen from my complex, I hope they report it…

The Monday Roundup

“…although traffic accidents remain a major public safety problem, the biggest killer of people ages 5 to 34, vehicle travel is far safer than it was a few decades ago.”
The New York Times

Here’s the news and other interesting stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– The Wall Street Journal takes a look at how “Bicyclists of a Feather Flock Together” in their article based on a new book about the subject of “bike tribes.”

– It’s been a few months since the reauthorization of MAP-21, the national transportation legislation, but our story on the implications of giving local roads over to federal control is creating national concern about the impact of federal road design standards, and some people are asking whether or not it makes sense to have federally controlled transportation projects at all.

– An analysis by the New York Daily News says the delay to New York City’s bike share system is a “blessing in disguise” that will give the city time to further build its network of bicycle infrastructure but also suggests the city should cancel the current contract with Alta Bike Share and restart the search for a bike share provider.
