4/21: Hello readers and friends. I'm still recovering from a surgery I had on 4/11, so I'm unable to attend events and do typical coverage. I'll post as I can and should improve day-by-day. Thanks for all your support 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

A $160 million renovation of University of Oregon’s Erb Memorial Student Union (EMU) will include a new, 5,000 square foot ‘Bike Center’ that will include retail and repair services, secure bike parking, showers, locker space and more. The project shows UO’s response to the growing demand for bicycling at the Eugene campus where 17 percent of students ride.

UO’s Bike Program is currently housed on the edge of campus in a cramped space dubbed “the barn.” EMU Bike Center Project Coordinator Briana Orr, who helped start UO’s Bike Program in 2008, told me today that the EMU Bike Center is modeled after Portland State University’s Bike Hub. “It’s best model we’ve seen.”

Bill Fasano is Portland’s newest bike shop proprietor. Green Garage Bicycle Repair just swung open its doors last week in the red-brick industrial building across the street from Widmer Brewery on N. Mississippi and Interstate.

Fasano, 38, is an Oregon native who grew up in West Linn and started racing bikes and working in local bike shops back in the mid 1990s. After leaving a job at Bike n’ Hike in 2000, he worked as an assistant project manager for a local home builder. Those were the boom times in the housing business, he told me when I stopped his shop this morning. “I was making good money, then all the sudden it stopped.”

When the car turned left (north) onto 110th, “she impacted the passenger side of the the car, as it turned.”

Neighbors distribute survey to help fix Ladd Circle traffic problems

Stop sign in Ladds

Ladd Circle has been a thorn in the side of neighbors, vehicle operators, and the City of Portland for years. The circle — which happens to sit on one of the most heavily traveled bicycle corridors in Portland — has stop signs at every entry; but they’re notoriously ignored.

The survey is titled, “A Busy Circle – In Search of Solutions.” Here’s more from an email being distributed about it:

“Ladd Circle is a memorable landmark in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood and during commuting hours can be a very busy thoroughfare. Thousands of cyclists, drivers and pedestrians make their way through each day.

The City of Portland is ready to start the public process on the North Portland Willamette Greenway Trail, a shared-use path that will someday extend the Eastbank Esplanade 10 miles — all the way to the St. Johns Bridge.

Citizen activists first came together to advocate for the project nearly six years ago. In May 2009, Metro ponied up $450,000 to help plan the route. Now, the City of Portland Parks & Recreation is looking for people to serve on the official Project Advisory Committee (PAC).

Dave Weber’s 40-plus mile, award-winning daily commute

On the road from
Dallas to Kansas City.

You could ride from Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, California but you still wouldn’t travel as many miles as Dave Weber rode his bike in September. Even adding a detour along Highway 101 from Sacramento to Bakersfield would give you fewer than the 1,096 miles Weber rode on his way to and from work last month.

Weber was the recipient of the Brian Reynolds Distance Award, given each year to the rider with the most miles logged in the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s Bike Commute Challenge.

How exactly did he ride 1,096 miles in one month, just on his way to and from work? Here’s a clue…
