BikeCraft 2011: Dates, venue set and a big announcement

BikeCraft is getting bigger and better this year in more ways than one.

But before I announce the dates and venue (scroll down if you can’t wait), I want to let you all know that I’ve officially handed over the event to someone else.

Since that magical snow night in January 2005, BikeCraft has had a special place in my heart. It still does; but this year, with some recent staffing changes (as in, I’m working solo at the moment), there was no way I could pull it all together.

Your comments can help shape bike share, other regional projects

While much of the media attention for the current round of Metro’s regional flexible funding allocation revolved around the Portland bike sharing project, there are a host of other (extremely important) projects and programs that have been selected.

Metro is accepting public comments on all the projects until 5:00 pm on October 13th. Metro wants to know, not simply whether or not you support a project, but how you’d like to see it implemented.

Description: Bridgestone XO-2 (a hybrid bike) with mustache handlebars (black grips) and kevlar tires, May or may not be accompanied by hot pink helmet. It has no fenders, but a rear rack with a collapsible basket attached (although those may have been removed by now). Looks somewhat like this picture except it was dirtier the last time I saw it, and with all the other features mentioned above. I am very very sad to lose this bike it has a lot of financial and emotional value for me. Please help me find it. Thanks.

Job Description
SoupCycle is looking for an energetic, upbeat and strong-legged person who can brave the winter rains of Portland and still be smiling when they deliver soup to customers. Someone willing to jump in wherever needed and a passion for sustainability and bicycles is a must. You must be physically able to lift 75 lbs and pedal a bike trailer carrying 220 lbs.

The position will start at approximately 15 hours/week split Monday-Wednesday. As we grow during this fall soupy season, so will your weekly hours- eventually maxing out at 20-25 hours/week. You’ll need a sturdy bike to attach to our soup trailer for deliveries.

Here’s what we’re looking for:
-Amazing customer service and a solid ambassador representing SoupCycle to your fellow Portlanders.
-Excitement about food and soup, and sharing that with customers during deliveries.
-Ability to wield a kitchen knife and chop vegetables like it’s nobody’s business.
-Occasional help at street fairs, catering or additional shifts Thursdays-Sundays.
-A one-year minimum commitment so you can get to know SoupCycle and become a vital part of the business.
-Other business skills are a plus, including cooking/kitchen experience, sales and web design.

Pay is $10 an hour plus a $25/month bike upkeep stipend and a generous soup allowance.

– California Governor Jerry Brown has has vetoed a safe passing bill on grounds that the stipulation of passing bikes at 15 mph would cause backups and safety problems. Advocates are upset and confused. (*Note: I made a mistake in my critique of Gov. Brown’s reasoning that has since been edited out. I regret the error. — JM)
