Care about transportation in Washington County? Time to step up

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Many roads in Washington County
lack safe access for bicycles.

If I had a picture of Uncle Sam riding a bicycle while pointing a finger in that iconic “I Want You” sort of way, I would put it here. Instead I’ll simply tell you about a chance to make the place we live a little better.

Washington County (which encompasses Hillsboro, Beaverton, Tigard and many other cities) is forming a Citizen Advisory Committee to help update its Transportation System Plan. The County’s goal is to have a committee “composed of citizens from different geographic subareas of the County and representatives of a range of interest groups” who will review changes to the transportation plan that impact “all modes of transportation – motor vehicle, transit, bicycle and pedestrian.”

Budget cuts could force hard decisions
on popular programs like Sunday Parkways.

As reported last week by The Oregonian, the City of Portland faces steep cuts in its 2012-2013 budget.

“As a result of global, national, and local factors that may impact the City and the uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook,” reads a memo sent to all agency directors from City Council last week, “we are asking bureaus… to prepare significant program cuts for FY 2012-2013.”

While a more detailed analysis of the revenue forecast isn’t expected until December, the writing is on the wall — cuts will have to be made. The big question for is, where?

Studded tire ban now just 80,000 signatures away from ballot

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Jeff Bernards, the chief petitioner behind an effort to preserve Oregon roads by banning studded tires, says the Oregon Supreme Court has finally issued him a Ballot Title. According to Bernards, that crucial step in the process to put the ban to voters in 2012 means he can print up official signature sheets. Now he and his team of supporters will need to get 80,000 signatures — the final step to get the ban on the ballot.

It took seven months for the Ballot Title to be finalized. That’s thanks to what Bernards calls “delay tactics” by a PR firm and a legal team hired by Les Schwab Tire Centers to squelch his efforts. In a post on the BlueOregon blog last week, Bernards wrote:

Tuesday, October 11th

PBOT’s “Fall/Winter Storm Season Preparedness” News Conference
PBOT welcomes El Nina. “Community partners will join PBOT Director Tom Miller to review fall and winter storm season preparedness plans and advisories to the public.” 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Transportation Maintenance Operations, Stanton Yard facility (2929 North Kerby).

N Williams Ave. Project Technical Work Session
While this is a committee work-session, the public is welcome. Committee members will learn more about Portland’s active transportation story and will be debriefed on N Williams traffic engineering issues. (If this sounds like a repeat, it sort of is. This is the result of PBOT’s restart of the project after adding many new committee members in light of concerns about racial equity.) Noon to 2:00 pm at Oregon Red Cross, 3131 N Vancouver Ave, Room TBD. More info.
