Bike Gallery is now accepting applicants for our central Bike Assembly Department. This is an entry level, seasonal position and offers the following:

• Full time hours available during the season
– Some weekend hours available
• The opportunity to further develop existing mechanical skills
• A production oriented work environment with no customer contact requirements
• Tools and work bench provided

Requirements include:
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Reliable, hardworking and team oriented
• Capable of working while standing for extended periods
• Capable of lifting 50 lbs. to shoulder height
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently
• Ability to perform detailed tasks based on verbal instructions

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience assembling bicycles and training is available.

Bike sharing has launched in Toronto, with much fanfare. As Canada’s government switches parties, support for the Bixi system isn’t falling along party lines. A reporter tries out the system and kind of likes it. Finally, a story about how the bikes are maintained by participants in a job training program.

Banks-Vernonia Trail wins tourism industry award

Travel Portland has announced that the Banks-Vernonia Trail is a recipient of a 2011 Tourism and Hospitality Industry Award.

Travel Portland recognized the trail with a “President’s Award,” for, “creating a new opportunity for our visitors to experience the natural beauty that is so accessible from Portland.”

The trail is a 21-mile linear state park created on a former railroad line between Banks and Vernonia. As of last October, the entire length of the trail is complete and offers people the ability to roll or walk the entire route without worrying about motor vehicles.

National advocacy groups are having a busy spring thanks to numerous threats to important pots of federal bike infrastructure funding.

From the Recreational Trails Program to Safe Routes to School, many crucial funding pots that have provided millions to bicycling and walking projects over the decades are in jeapordy of being slashed by lawmakers in D.C.

The latest threat is perhaps the most blatant and it comes from a very high-profile and important figure in deciding what is included in the forthcoming transportation bill.

At long last, the Vancouver Avenue Bridge is open

The North Vancouver Avenue Bridge has finally been re-opened. The bridge, which provides a crucial north-south link for bicycle traffic over the Columbia Slough, was closed for nearly a year for much-needed repairs to its foundation.

The closure caused headaches for people who bike between Vancouver and North Portland because the detours around the construction were far from ideal. As we reported about three months after the closure, many people raised concerns about the safety and accessibility of the detours.

I just returned from an open house for the Lloyd District Bikeway projects. Unfortunately, my hunches about the direction each of them is headed have been confirmed.

At this point, I think it’s time to take the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 off the shelf and give it a re-read.

After a presentation by the project team at the open house today, Craig Harlow, speaking as a member of the Lloyd TMA Bike Committee (he’s also a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee), shared some closing remarks. Here’s what he said:
