Touting new survey, LaHood helps clear the way for more bikeways

“More cars on more roads may not be the best way to move people more effectively.”
— Ray LaHood, US Secretary of Transportation

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is doing more than his part to dismantle our nation’s car-centric status-quo. After his “end of favoring motorized transportation” proclamation last month, LaHood is now telling anyone who will listen that the American people have his back.

As validation of his views, LaHood is touting a new survey released by Transportation for America that shows a majority of Americans want options — other than wider roads for cars — to get around and relieve congestion.

Bicycling Mag: Portland no longer America’s top bike city

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“There’s a lot going on in Portland, but there are other cities having more astonishing success at this point.”
— Loren Mooney, Editor-in-Chief Bicycling Magazine

Bicycling Magazine’s annual list of America’s top bicycle cities puts Portland in unfamiliar territory: second place. Since 1995, Portland has consistently been ranked as the #1 biking city, earning the title every year the rankings have been held since 1995 (1999, 2001, 2006 and 2008).

But this year, that honor goes to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Here’s how the top 10 rankings ended up (great to see Eugene in the 5th spot!):

Event flyer

Leave it to Portland’s very own Team Beer to do what might possibly be the most outlandish bike team sponsorship promotion ever: The Team Beer/WaxOn Wax Off.

According to Team Beer spokesman John Howe, the event is a way to get some attention for their newest sponsor, WaxOn Spa on East Burnside. Howe says several teams have committed to take part and so far there are eight contestants. “The theory of the contest is to see who makes the biggest transformation — from toes to neck.”

Here’s more from the event’s Facebook page:

Bill Walton autographed helmet-1

One lucky person will win this collectible
helmet signed by Bill Walton.

All the pieces to the big Bike to Blazers event are coming together. The rally, ride, and mini-expo at the Rose Quarter are all set.

The big news is that the bike section is sold out! We had 100 seats reserved and they’re all gone. This means we’ll have one rocking and bike-loving group of fans to cheer on our home team and send them into the playoffs with a bang. It also means that the other 20,000 Blazer fans in attendance will get a not-so-subtle hint that biking to the game is not just possible, but it can be a ton of fun too!

The Monday Roundup

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– Even a police officer dressed in a bunny suit can’t get a break when trying to cross the street in a crosswalk.

– The US federal government may soon prohibit text messaging while driving a commercial truck. Texting while driving is already illegal in 20 states and restricted in 9 more, and banned by many trucking companies.

– Reactions to LaHood’s promise to invest in bicycle infrastructure are split along party lines.
