Citizen activist moves forward on push to ban studded tires

on studded tires.

Remember Jeff Bernards? He’s the citizen activist I wrote about in early March who wants to push the state legislature to finally do something to curtail the use of studded tires. Since that story published, Bernards has been busy.

After many years of writing letters to the editor and testifying about the issue at City Council, Bernards is finally going to do something about it. Why? Studded tires do about $50-60 million in damage to Oregon roads each year (and ODOT spends about $11 million on repairs because of them — money that could be spent on other things).

In an effort to assess the usage rates and demand for on-street bike parking, the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation will conduct its first ever bike parking counts this summer.

The counts will be done annually and the idea is to tally the number of bikes both in the existing on-street bike corrals and surrounding vicinity. Sarah Figliozzi, manager of PBOT’s bike parking program says, “This information will show us how the corrals are currently performing and how demand changes over the warmer season and through subsequent years.”

Mike Luther and his grandson, Lucas.

Last August, Portlander Mike Luther was intentionally run over by a car driven by a man incensed with road rage. Luther survived, but he and his family have suffered ever since. The road to recovery has been difficult because Luther is still unable to work due to his injuries and a series of legal delays have prevented him from getting restitution.

Luther’s sister, Tracey Brown, got in touch with me recently in hopes that the community that offered him so much support immediately following the incident might still be able to help.
