Gearing up for the rainy season: wool, knickers, and other urban cycling essentials

Even with more sunny weather ahead of us in the forecast, it’s impossible to escape the impending reality of the rainy season. Cool, rainy mornings last week had us delving into the backs of our closets for pants, long sleeve shirts, even jackets. And of course, wool.
Last winter we sang the praises of wool as a winter riding fabric, for the chic utility rider as well as for the performance minded sporty cyclist.
It seems that the bike industry is starting to catch on.

Reader Photo of the Week: New parking on Division, for bikes and from bikes

The Division Streetscape Project aims to create “green main street”

with a bioswale (at SE Clay and 11th)
(Photo © J. Maus)
The city plans to turn SE Division Street into a “green main street” between SE 6th and SE 39th.
Division Streetscape and Reconstruction project manager Elizabeth Mahon presented draft intersection redesign plans to the city’s Bicycle Advisory Committee last night, requesting feedback.
The project will give SE Division a green makeover, largely focused on capturing stormwater runoff in new curb extension bioswales. Project staff are currently looking at installing these and making on-street parking for cars and bicycles permanent along much of the corridor.
New Xtracycle child seat eases kid/cargo compatibility

If you want to carry your groceries on your bike, or pick up a load of lumber from the hardware store, there are a lot of bikes out there for you on the U.S. market, particularly longtail bikes — particularly the Xtracycle, the Yuba Mundo, and the Kona Ute.
But wait, you also want to carry a child or two along with all that orange juice and cat litter? That’s a little more tricky.
But times are changing, with Xtracycle’s release this week of the PeaPod LT, the first child seat that is fully compatible with its longtail bikes.

“Umbrella” nonprofit helps navigate the wonky side of activism
[Editor’s note: This profile of local livable streets nonprofit Umbrella is the first story of new BikePortland news intern Jenny Leonard. Welcome, Jenny!]
“Umbrella seeks to empower community-based street culture. Streets are meant to connect, not divide, neighborhoods. We support active ideas that develop streets as vibrant, safe, and welcoming public spaces that serve communities.”
–Umbrella’s mission statement
Our city is chock full of community events for alternative transportation. The small organizations that man these events put in a lot of time and effort setting up, running, and enjoying the event. But there is more happening behind the scenes — the nitty-gritty accounting and organization nobody sees.
Often the people who handle these chores belong to a volunteer-run, non-profit group called Umbrella. Steph Routh, the organization’s president (her day job is leading the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition); secretary Matt Picio (co-founder of bike touring organization Cycle Wild), and board member Theo Elliot Roffe sat down with me to detail how Umbrella started, what exactly Umbrella is and how it works in the greater Portland community.
Google street view camera trike sighted in Portland this week

for their StreetView feature.
(Photo: Google)
It looks like Google Streetview will soon be coming to a bike path near you.
We first reported back in June on the buzz about Google’s new mapping tricycles — intended to capture streetview footage of roads where cars can’t go.
Since then, we’ve been wondering when the trikes will start showing up on Portland streets. Last week, we heard the first rumor, via Twitter, of a street view trike appearance on the Springwater Corridor near SE 112th.
Yesterday, reader Marc Schuette got in touch about another sighting, and included a video clip of the trike in action. Check it out after the jump.
The Monday Roundup
Placing the blame; Russell Crowe; Green Impact Zone; lawfully running reds; Google’s next big thing; carfree campus; competing one-way streets
Here’s the last week in news, rounded up after the long weekend.
– The electric car money is landing; Swiss battery company ReVolt is planning to open its North American headquarters in Portland. Here’s an in-depth look at the electric car stimulus program from Seattle, which is also a test city. And Time Magazine discusses the future of “zero emissions” cars.
– If you kill someone with your car while texting in Utah, you can now get up to 15 years in prison. In Wales, a gory video warns teens of the dangers of intextication.
– Depending on your perspective, one of the most and least attractive aspects of urban light rail is the way it boosts property values. A case study outlines some of the discussions and dilemmas around affordable housing as Atlanta, Georgia plans for a new train system.
