Details emerge in Friday’s alleged assault (Updated)
“All agreed that the car was going very fast in reverse and one person said he had heard loud words exchanged.”
We reported this weekend on an incident in which Wayne Conrad Thompson was arrested after he collided, in his car, with a man on a bike.
Thompson was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, a charge that is used when someone is suspected of having intentionally harmed another person with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
The Oregonian has obtained a court document and is now reporting more details on the incident. It occurred in a parking lot, they report, near NE 122nd and Glisan. Witnesses apparently heard shouting and then saw Thompson back his car “as fast as it possibly could go” into 52 year old Portland resident Michael Luther, who was riding a bicycle at the time.

City reacts to the new cycle track

cycle track are why Portlanders drive
an average of 20% less than
people in other cities.

Yesterday, the City of Portland unveiled their first cycle track. At a press conference on the campus of Portland State University, Mayor Sam Adams was joined by PSU President Wim Weiwel and BTA leader Scott Bricker to sing each other’s — and the cycle track’s — praises.
The turnout at the press conference by the local media was amazing. I counted four TV station cameras and a bevy of local reporters. In Portland, re-configuring a downtown street to create space specifically for bicycle traffic is a big story (especially when that space was created by removing one lane previously used by motor vehicle traffic).

Denmark’s ‘Dreams on Wheels’ will make Portland stop

(in more ways than one).
(Photo: Mikael Colville-Andersen)
Dreams on Wheels — a major exhibition of Danish cycling culture and its impact on urban design, transportation and society — is coming to Portland in October.
The exhibit is being brought to Portland through a collaboration between the City of Portland, the Danish Embassy, and organizers of the six-week Oregon Manifest event. Dreams on Wheels is a traveling exhibit that, according to a press release “merges urban cycling culture, design intelligence, and environmental consciousness”. The exhibit features case studies on how cycling has affected Danish culture and society.

Beaverton resident, race promoter, and bike advocate Kris Schamp has joined a grassroots effort to save 34,000 acres of rural farmland from industrial and residential development in Washington County.
Schamp, owner of Portland Racing and communications director of Northwest Trail Alliance, has organized the “Save Helvetia! Bike Ride” that will take place this Saturday (9/5).
