Special screening of ‘Bike Porn’ for lycra-clad STP riders

This weekend is the 30th annual Seattle to Portland ride and around 10,000 people are expected to roll into town.

After over 200 miles (30 of them uphill) in the saddle, the riders will have a lot to be happy about when they arrive at Holladay Park near the Lloyd Center. There will be congratulatory hugs from family and friends, food, drinks, music, an expo area, and now — thanks to entrepreneurial bike fun provocateur “Reverend” Phil Sano — there will be bike porn.

Sano has spent the last three years touring the country with a varied collection of short films that celebrate bodies and bikes. His latest (the third set he has put together) is Bike Porn 3: Cycle Bound. Sano says the six or so screenings so far gotten a “stellar reaction”.

Sano sees his films as a way to break down America’s cultural timidity toward nakedness (a topic Sano, who infamously fought (and won) for “naked justice” in court, knows well). About Cycle Bound, Sano reflected, “It has pushed a lot of boundaries and been the catalyst for some important discussions about sex, gender and obscenity.” (Event flyer below the jump).

Always one for cross-pollinating between various parts of the bike culture, Sano has put together a special screening of Bike Porn 3: Cycle Bound, just for STP riders. At the show slated for this Sunday night at Clinton Street Theater (SE Clinton and 26th), Sano says anyone who shows up in lycra and/or skin-tight clothing gets a discount on admission and is eligible to join the “Lycra-Fast-Fashion Show” that will happen prior to the movies.

To promote the screening, Sano posted a message in the official STP forums on Cascade.org. In that message he wrote about things he has learned about sex, bikes and American culture:

“Bikes are sexy. It’s true, riding makes us healthier. But more than having an improved resting heart rate and killer legs, bikes themselves are sexy and the act of cycling is sexy. It could be the freedom we have when traveling under out own power. It could be the attention to detail in those beautiful custom frames. It could be the straining of muscles in rhythmic motions but for whatever reason it is exciting.”

And just in case you have a certain idea about Sano, he adds,

“We are not your average sleazy pornographers. We are doing it better, and everyone is encouraged to show off their healthy bodies regardless of their shape.”

For more excitement, you’ll have to come to the screening Sunday night.

I was really pleased with the variety of genders and sexualities in this year’s bunch of Bike Porn movies. Not every movie is gonna do it for you, but probably at least one of them will!

Thanks Jonathan! It would be easy to write this off as just another example of Portland Wierdness (Id say it certainly does qualify). But issues around sex culture are important not just so that we have high quality erotic art, but also so that we learn to understand each other and how to deal with mature themes in a mature way.

Plus the movies are pretty amazing too. Hope to see lots of spandex Sunday night!
