Today is Bike to Work Day!
Here in Portland, the day isn’t met with the same kind of fanfare as in some other cities (where the idea of biking is much more of a novelty). But even so, there’s at least one big event planned today — the annual Bike to Work Breakfast hosted by the Lloyd District Transportation Management Association (their mission is to improve access and mobility in the Lloyd District).
Portland Mayor Sam Adams, with his new carfree commitment and fresh off a trip to the Velo-City conference in Brussells, might stop by Oregon Square (6th and NE Holladay) between 7:30-9:00 this morning to join the fun.
Last week, the City of Portland hosted 400-plus bikers for free breakfast at Pioneer Courthouse Square. It’s all part of a full month of Bike to Work events planned around the city.
But hey, this is an open thread, so we’d love to hear from you!
What’s planned for Bike to Work Day in your town?

that’s funny – i read this headline just moments after deciding to play hooky and calling in sick today . . . . so i guess i’m celebrating bike to work day by lots of biking and no working!!
Lloyd Bikettes, eh? But, the real question is: Can they harmonize the Boogie Woogie Biker Boiz in Company B?
I’m still recruiting the Biking Barber Shop Quartet in Drag for Pedalpalooza’s PDX Cycle Chic! Anyone game?
If you are looking for something to do on Sunday, the Easy Riders are riding to Milwaukie’s farmers market then to Elk Rock Island for a picnic. Details are here.
I celebrated Bike to Work Day by oversleeping and getting a ride in with my husband. :-/
However I did ride in – not all the way, but 5mi isn’t bad if you’re me – twice this week, which I haven’t done in months. I plan to keep at it.
Rode this morning the Lloyd TMA’s Bike to Work Day bash. Didn’t win a door prize, but filled up on pastries and chochkies.
Nice that it isn’t raining on Bike to Work day. I rode in, just like everyday, but unlike yesterday, I didn’t get wet.
Isn’t that everyday?
I biked my somewhat lonely, hilly commute from SE Portland out to Kruse Way and I-5. I saw a few cyclists heading the opposite direction into town, but alas, I saw no one heading the same direction as me. I guess that’s why they don’t serve breakfast for cyclists on the Sellwood Bridge (that and the fact that they wouldn’t fit on our narrow little sidewalk).
I didn’t know it was bike to work day but how can you not bike on a day like today? Sorry to say, none of the freebies are on my way to anywhere I need be today.
Off topic plug for the businesses (and local craft vendors) in my ‘hood, bike on down to the Art Hop on Alberta Street tomorrow.
The street will be blocked off and there is plenty of fun to be had!
Every day is bike-to-work day, but if I had to pick just one, I think it would be last Wednesday.
Rode into my office in the Lloyd district. More parents with kids on bikes than I usually see traveling through SE but maybe that’s because I left the house late. What a lovely day!
Another lonely bike to work this morning – did not see another bike as I crossed East Beaverton on the way to PCC Sylvania at 5 am. I don’t know that there is ANY recognition that happens in Beaverton anyway. It would be nice if something like the activities on the bridges could take place in the suburbs. I would ride through the center of Beaverton to participate for the special days!
Yeah everyday is bike to work (school) day for me but free breakfast drew me from Vancouver to the food and back to Vancouver again before classes started at 9. It was fun.
