A FREE VEHICLE LAW CLASS FOR BICYCLISTS

What: Class on Oregon’s vehicle laws from a bicyclist’s perspective with Bike Lawyer Ray Thomas.

Easter weekend means different things to different people. Some folks go to church and some folks ride their bikes through the city dressed up like bunnies (and I’m sure some folks do both).
But before the bunnies on bikes take over, let’s not forget about “Alice in Paris”.
Yes, it’s that time of the year again when the BTA throws a big party where the entire Portland Bike Mafia shows up, drink lots of wine and formulates sinister plots to take over the city. Should be fun.
Then, on Sunday it’s time to celebrate Easter by taking part in two great, time-honored Portland traditions: the Bunny on a Bike Ride and Zoobomb.
Want to take you kids Zoo-Bombing, but don’t like all the booze, and can’t stay out late on a school night?
Well, come on up to the hill on Sundays, at 4:30 pm, and try out the new KID BOMB!
MEET at the Veterans War Memorial in Washington Park.
This Sunday, Easter, we will have our first event, including an egg hunt!

The City of Portland’s Bureau of Maintenance is pushing forward to improve bike/truck safety.
Regrettably I won’t be inside the Barack Obama rally this morning. However, I did stop by the Coliseum on my way into the office to check out the bike parking situation.
While there are definitely a lot of bikes parked illegally (a technicality, since there is not an adequate number of legal spaces), the situation seems to be under control. I didn’t see any signs of security guards removing bikes (yet).
It was good to see hundreds of bikes parked outside the entrance!
Volunteers working on Barack Obama’s event in Portland tomorrow at the Memorial Coliseum are scrambling to make sure they’ve got enough bike parking capacity.
They’re well aware of what happened back in February when cyclists didn’t find enough parking at an event at the Oregon Convention Center. In that case, bolt-cutter wielding security guards (caught in action in this YouTube clip) impounded and removed bikes that were parked to railings and iron fences in front of the event.
The Transportation Options division of PDOT has just printed up 30,000 new city bike maps (not to be confused with Metro’s “Bike There” map). I got a look at them first-hand today thanks to long-time Options staffer and mapping guru Jeff Smith.
Jeff pointed out that for the first time ever, they’ve devoted a full section a small section on the back of the map to the city of Beaverton (about 8 miles west of Portland). Here’s a little sneak peak…
Billing it as an, “event to celebrate Portland’s new ‘Green Space’,” the City of Portland’s Office of Transportation has just announced details of a press event next week that will draw attention to their first installation of a series of bike safety improvements around the city.
The event will be held at Clever Cycles (908 SE Hawthorne), just a few blocks from where the city’s first bike box went in last weekend.
In the past two years, Portland’s bicycle industry and the economic impact of our bike culture has gotten plenty of attention — from the New York Times to National Public Radio.
The business of bikes also gained clout on the local political scene when Portland’s City Council passed a resolution officially recognizing the bicycle industry and directing the Portland Development Commission to make it one of their “target industries”.
