At around 3:30 on Saturday afternoon, a Toyota FourRunner backed into the wall of the Community Cycling Center (CCC) on NE 17 Avenue (at Alberta).
Several employees were working at the time (getting ready for the Holiday Bike Drive this morning), but thankfully, none of them were in the office at the time of impact and no one was hurt.
Today at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in North Portland, 519 kids received a special holiday gift: a new bicycle.
Culminating over 5,000 volunteer hours over the past year, the Community Cycling Center’s (CCC) Holiday Bike Drive was once again a big success.
Speaking at a brunch for supporters before the kids arrived, CCC executive director Susan Remmers said, “We hope today is about possibilities. This event is what we’re all about…it’s at the very heart of our mission.”
“We want to take a leadership role with this, and we hope that other bureaus and divisions in the city take note.”
–Jeff Guard, risk specialist with the Portland Water Bureau
As part of a proactive effort to increase bike safety around their Interstate facility, The City of Portland’s Water Bureau will issue a mandate to employees next week that prohibits all their vehicles from using N Wheeler Avenue.
Wheeler used to provide convenient access to the Water Bureau’s main Interstate facility, but this move comes in light of a growing concern for bike safety and potential collisions with bicycles at the notoriously dangerous intersection of at Wheeler, Broadway, and Flint Avenues (in graphic below).
As part of their SmartTrips Downtown campaign, the City of Portland’s Transportation Options crew has a Commuter Central Blog. They recently posted a clever “transportation pyramid” (based on the U.S. government’s nutritional pyramid).
Over two years ago, when I still did my other blog (it covered marketing and PR in the bike industry), I came across a commercial for Miller High Life made by filmmaker Errol Morris.
Recently, a friend reminded me of it and I thought it deserved another look. Watch and listen to what I think might be the best commercial ever made:
Trek 5200 OCLV, Carbon Fiber bike, Kysrium wheel set, Deda Newton bars and stem, speedplay pedals, Sella Italia saddle.

This morning I got a call from Mike Mason who works in the community and public affairs office at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
Mike (who happens to be a daily reader of this site) wanted to give me some background on why ODOT maintenance crews painted over a stencil created as a memorial for Brett Jarolimek that was painted on a bridge support near the intersection of N. Interstate and Greeley.
Mike expressed that he thought it was “a great stencil” and that, despite usual policy that calls for more immediate removal of graffiti, his crews wrestled with this decision for weeks. Here’s more of what he said:
