Clever Cycles, the shop known for bringing Dutch bikes and European cycling sensibilities to Portland, has announced a new expansion that will give them storefront real estate on one of the City’s busiest bikeways; SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Just around the corner from their current location, Clever’s new space will give them more room and allow them to expand their fashion and accessory offerings. Co-owner Martina Fahrner says the new space means a host of new products.

“If there could be better placement for a practical bike storefront than right on Hawthorne, right off that bridge, we can’t imagine.”
— Clever Cycles co-owner Todd Fahrner

Soon to debut will be bike clothing from Ibex, Buddhaful, Bicycle Fixation, locally made hats and t-shirts, a variety of rain gear and “warm undies for kids”. They’ll also expand their existing selection of panniers, bike bags, and other accessories.

About the clothing to be offered, co-owner Todd Fahrner says,
“it’s a bit of a conundrum: we champion “everyday, plain clothes” biking, but then offer special clothing? … A lot of it is just wool: wool is just the greatest stuff ever for climes like this. Stuff that works in layers, stuff that doesn’t bind, stuff that looks good and doesn’t stink so changing clothes to go by bike becomes unnecessary. There’s even a lot of wool stuff for little kids, because biking year round with family really calls for it.”

The expansion comes just months after the store’s opening and according Mr. Fahrner, “it’s been a cash stretch.” However he also adds that “sales have been strong…we’re optimistic…if there could be better placement for a practical bike storefront than right on Hawthorne, right off that bridge, we can’t imagine. It was “take it or leave it.” We took it.”

You can join the folks at Clever Cycles at a toast to their new store front next Tuesday (10/16) at 5:00. The address is 908 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

In other bike shop expansion news, popular Northeast Portland-based Cyclepath has relocated to a much larger space at 2436 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Stay tuned for photos and a report…

We got a bobike from Clever Cycles and it has been awesome. We get funny looks on rides with our daughter sitting up front of the rider, but if you have kids younger than 3 it is the way to transport them!

The good folks at Clever Cycles let me into the new space to try on a pair of comfy, wool pants. I love them and the new space. It\’s got to be the most aesthetically pleasing LBS I\’ve ever seen. What\’s even more amazing is that it\’s full of stuff I\’m interested in owning.
