MTB Oregon here I come
Tonight I’m off to Oakridge, Oregon (“The center of Oregon recreation”) to take part in Mountain Bike Oregon.
The event promises three full days of riding on what I’ve heard are some of the best trails anywhere in the country. I’ll join about 150 other folks at a rustic camp along the Willamette River and ride till our heart’s content (then talk about it every night over cold beer).
My love affair with mountain biking began in 1995, but has been on hiatus since I moved to Portland three years ago. I can’t wait to get down there and rekindle the relationship. I hope the sparks still fly like they used to in the old days.
Stay tuned for reports and photos from the trail.

Ride your bike, park in the street, get a free taco
I just published a story about the DIY on-street bike parking in front of ¿Por Que No? taqueria on N. Mississippi Avenue.
Then, in a strange coincidence, at nearly the exact moment I hit “publish,” a reader (without knowing about my story) sent me some interesting information about an email he just received from the owner of ¿Por Que No?, Bryan Steelman (he’s also president of the local business association).
Last Thursday at the Clown House
This is their final month at the house on 24th and Alberta. Come one come all! Be a part of the fun or just see a show you’ll never forget!
A final Last Thursday for the Clown House
Yes folks, it’s true. Tonight at Last Thursday on Alberta Street, the Clown House (at NE 24th and Alberta) will play host to hijinks and fun for the very last time.
Due to rents that have shot far beyond a clown’s wage, Dingo, Pinga, Chlorine, Will, and the rest of crew are looking for a new place to live. Ironically, they’ve been forced out of the neighborhood due to the gentrification that their presence helped hasten.
I’m sure wherever they end up, they’ll become the same bastion of busking, irreverence and silliness that they’ve become known for on Alberta.
DIY on-street bike parking in NoPo
[Update: The owner is hoping for on-street bike parking. Read here for the latest.]
A little taco joint on Mississippi Street in north Portland has taken a DIY approach to on-street bike parking.
Directly in front of ¿Por Que No? taqueria, a few bikes have been parked in the street, perpendicular to the curb and a sign hangs over them that reads, “Today’s Special: Bike Parking”.
Perhaps inspired by the new, on-street “bike corral” just a few blocks north at Amnesia Brewing, the owner of ¿Por Que No? is either doing it the quick and dirty way, or he’s in the process of getting a corral of his own and he’s just prepping his customers for what’s to come.
One thing’s for sure, this location could use more space for bikes. Similar to the situation on SE Belmont (which resulted in on-street bike corrals) the sidewalk here is cramped.

Options for the perfect family bike
My wife Juli is currently looking to outfit herself with a family bike and the options are staggering.
She’s been obsessed with looking at all the different bikes, child seats, trailers, trail-a-bikes, and other equipment. When you’ve got to run around town with two growing kids (one almost 2, the other 4 1/2) and whatever other stuff you’re hauling or picking up, there’s a lot to think about.
Finally, we’ve settled on a preferred alternative: an Xtracycle with a child seat mounted to Juli’s old mountain bike. You can see a photo of it at the bottom of this post.
If you’re looking for a new family bike, or just want to see what other folks are doing, check out these shots I dug up from my archives…
