🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Low-Car Diet Kickoff

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

@ Pioneer Courthouse Square – Downtown Portland

Portland’s second annual Low-Car Diet begins July 9 and will continue through August 6. During this time 30 Portland residents have agreed to ‘trim the automobile waistband’ and hand over the keys to their own car for the entire month. For many participants, the Low-Car Diet Challenge is a fun way to test out whether permanently reducing personal car use is a viable option for them in the Portland area.

To make the Challenge fun and a bit easier, the participants will be given a monthly transit pass, a Flexcar membership and a $200 driving credit, a $50 gift certificate to Bike Gallery, free grocery delivery service from New Season’s Market, a Chinook Book, and for those that go the whole month, a round trip ticket on Amtrack Cascades anywhere between Eugene to Seattle .

Stolen Trek 7300 FX

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The bike is a silver Trek 7300 FX (2005) – looks almost identical to the 7300FX posted four days ago, and oddly enough stolen just a block away.

At the time it was stolen, there was a holder for a Trek Kryptonite lock attached to the frame and a light attached to the handlebars secured using two red plastic cable ties. Under the seat, there is also a tiny blue light encased in green plastic.

There is/was also a purple sticker near the front of the frame with a registration number from Indiana University; I believe it begins with BK, though I’ll update this when I have more info.

If you find it, you rock my world.

Cheers!

Don’t miss the Night Ride this weekend

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just a quick reminder about a great ride coming up tomorrow night. The annual Night Ride benefits the BTA and always offers up an enjoyable bill of fare, including disco-dancers, pajama clad riders, fire dancers, and of course, doughnuts.

The ride leaves at 9pm from the Train Station downtown, and registration will be open before the ride.

Now get back out there and enjoy the sun.

Two types of police response to O’Donnell tragedy

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The fatal crash that took the life of Timothy O’Donnell seems to have resulted in two different responses by law enforcement personnel. The Washington County Sheriff’s office shows a willingness to work with the community for tougher laws against motorists, while the North Plains Police opt for increased enforcement directed at bicyclists.

A story in the Forest Grove News-Times earlier this week reported that Sheriff Rob Gordon was “steamed” by O’Donnell’s death. The article said the police see “eye-to-eye” with cyclists and that they support a tougher, felony-based vehicular homicide law.

PDOT pushing for lower speed limits?

[Updated: 8:25pm]

Poll on PDOT website

I just got an email from someone who claims that PDOT is “investigating the possibility of lowering the speed limits of neighborhood streets.”

The message pointed me to the Safety page of the PDOT website where there is currently a “Pulse Poll” that asks, “What do you think the speed limit should be on neighborhood streets?”

The graphic at right shows the current results as of about 3:00 today.
