TriMet’s trail party promises free food, fun, and prizes

In case you haven’t heard (or seen the banners), TriMet is throwing a party for cyclists next Friday (7/13).

The reason? Bribery, plain and simple.

Their big light rail construction project has torn up several parts of the I-205 bike path, so they figure to make nice they’ll offer a supported bike ride to show us the detour, give us a bunch of free food and entertainment and then, to top it all of, offer a ton of great prizes.

The sixth installment of PDOT’s monthly Bicycle Master Plan Rides took a closer look at bikeway facilities in and around the central city.

A hearty group of cyclists followed the lead of City bike coordinator Roger Geller to the ride’s first stop: the South Waterfront. On our way, we sampled the handy wheelgutters that help cyclists get up the stairs between SW Market and Harrison.

Stolen Lemond Etape

Lemond Etape, size 57, silver bike with yellow patches and black type over the yellow areas. Was stolen in front of Doug Fir Lounge on July 3 from 10:30-1:30 at night. Address was approx. 8th and Burnside. There is a little electrical tape covering the handlebar tape.

Local firm lands contract for Dubai bike plan

Local consulting firm Alta Planning and Design has landed a contract to develop a bicycle master plan for Dubai of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Alta — who is currently working with PDOT on an update to Portland’s bike master plan — has been hired for the four-month project.

According to Alta principal (and former PDOT bike coordinator) Mia Birk, the Sheik of Dubai is very interested in promoting health and fitness among his people. Dubai, like many highly prosperous Arab nations, is facing rising rates of heart disease and obesity.

PORTLAND, OR — Take a moon-lit urban bicycle adventure through Portland
on The Night Ride, a benefit bicycle ride on Saturday, July 7th, 2007
starting at 8:00 pm from the train station. The mostly flat, 15-mile
street course takes riders past fire jugglers and hootin’ and hollerin’
Portland night life. Cyclists will stop at a special outdoor screening
of short bicycle movies from Filmed by Bike as they munch on theater
popcorn. The next stop is a disco party en route to the finish line
all-you-can-eat doughnut feast. This ride is a benefit for the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance.
