🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

The multi-year process to create a new transportation link between Lake Oswego and Portland is nearing an important decision and the BTA warns that the, “opportunity to connect the region for cyclists” might be lost.

Next Monday (7/16), Metro will host a public hearing where the Lake Oswego to Portland Transit and Trails Alternative Analysis Committee (LOPAC) will make a final recommendation to Metro Council as to which of two options (express bus service or streetcar) should move forward into the next phase of study.

PDOT is looking for a few good volunteers to help them with a very important project. They need your help to count bicyclists at various locations throughout the city.

Last summer, over 50 volunteers helped with the count and the result was a 21-page report (view results and download here) that according to city bike coordinator Roger Geller is “invaluable information for the city”.

Public hearing: Lake Oswego to Portland Transit and Trail Alternatives Analysis

The cities of Lake Oswego and Portland, Clackamas and Multnomah counties, TriMet, Oregon Department of Transportation and Metro have coordinated to study options to provide transit, bike and pedestrian connections between Lake Oswego and Portland. The process is guided by a steering committee co-chaired by Metro Councilors Rex Burkholder and Brian Newman and made up of elected officials from each of the partner agencies. The project is expected to result in a recommendation from the Metro Council on which options to move forward into an environmental analysis.

Prior to that, and after a public open house, the citizen-based project advisory committee and the technical advisory committee will make a locally preferred alternative recommendation to the steering committee. The steering committee will review these two recommendations, take public comment at this hearing and make a recommendation to project partners. Local jurisdictions will be asked to adopt a resolution in support of the locally preferred alternative recommendation. The Metro Council will consider all public comments and resolutions from local governments before adopting a preferred alternative.

“It seems that several people have taken my comments out of context…Our efforts to step up enforcement at stop signs has been focused towards everyone…
