Stolen: Green Cannondale MTB

I just had my bike stolen today from outside my office — the Towne
Storage building at 17 SE 3rd Avenue — zip is 97214. It was locked
up with a cable lock — not the biggest gauge wire, but not skinny
either — and it looks like they hit it with cable cutters.

It was a 1997 Cannondale mountain bike with a head shock. Tough to
replace as I had a friend working in the tech department for
Cannondale at the time and he put it together with parts he tested
(thus the aluminum crank and other niceties).

I’ve attached pictures taken back in 2004 — sorry they’re so grainy.

I also just put in a police report with Officer Hill from the NE
precinct (I live in NE and they came to the house).

Stolen: Blue/black Trek road bike

Aug 10th between 3-6 pm. It’s blue and black with fenders on both wheels and
a rack in the back. I just bought it last week from The Bike Gallery. Serial

Fatal crash sparks outrage, activism

The crash in Beaverton last week that claimed the life of Mike Wilberding has sparked outrage and spurred action from citizen activists.

The incident has caused some cyclists to question the priorities of bike advocates and city planners. One commenter asked,

“what is the more important fight at this time: more bike infrastructure or vastly improved law enforcement to protect cyclists?”

Many people are fed up with what they consider just the latest example of too lenient punishment doled out by authorities for fatal crashes that involve cyclists. In the case of Wilberding, the motorist at fault was issued a $242 ticket for “failure to yield to a bicyclist.”

Catch crit action downtown tomorrow night

The South Park Blocks will be taken over by super-fast cyclists tomorrow night at the fifth annual Health Net Portland Twilight Criterium. I went last year and had a great time.

The spectating is awesome. These guys come whizzing by, inches away from you…and as darkness falls, things get crazy.

This year they’ll have live music, a beer garden, a food court and free helmets for kids until 7:30 (provided by Health Net). Come down and support a great local race. You can even cheer on Portland’s very own Doug Ollerenshaw (just heard Doug will not be there), a member of Team Health Net (seen here in last year’s race).

Stolen: Orange Kona MTB

My bike was stolen today (Aug. 9th) from the front of 1400 SW 5th Ave
building (5th Ave and Columbia) on the 5th Ave side. It is an orange
Kona mountain bike, says “Hot” on the frame. Has red rims on both
the tires, clip in pedals, wireless odometer, two water bottle racks,
back rack for bags. It is about a 53 or 54 in size. I just moved
here from Seattle so it hadn’t been registered yet with the city…I
have to look for pictures…

Back in December I shared the story of my ride with Alan Koch. Alan is a retired photographer who’s on a quest to ride every single mile of paved road in the City of Portland.

Despite some setbacks—including a fall from his bike which took him out for 5 weeks—he has just completed a major milestone and has now ridden every road in east Portland!

From the Willamette River way out east to 185th and from the Columbia River in the north down south to the Clackamas County line.

Cycle-Pak founder dies while riding home from work

I received a sad email yesterday. It was from a reporter, looking for someone to interview about the death of Mike Wilberding last Saturday in Beaverton.

I had to double-take at the name, but quickly realized it was the same Mike behind Cycle-Pak, one of my first advertisers here on BikePortland.org.

At 6:22pm August 1st, Mike was riding home from work going eastbound on SW Fifth Street in Beaverton when an oncoming car turned left in front of him. The driver said the sun was in his eyes and that he never even saw him. The police have cited the vehicle for failure to yield to a bicycle.

Stolen: 3 Specialized bikes

Our 3 road bikes were stolen on about 7/27 from our enclosed front portch (I know, I know). They are each specialized brand bikes.. They are a grey specialized Allez and a black Allez (1 year old each) and a silver specialized Sequoia (3 years old, about). The sequoia is decked out with a rack on the back, full fenders, and cateye cycle computer, and pump and carbon water bottle cage. The 2 Allez cycles had cateye computers as well. Each had a small bike bag with tools, tubes, etc. the Sequoia had my house keys!. The locks have already been changed at home.

The sequoia also had a hitch holder for a trailer through the rear quick release and ritchey handle bars. Each bike also has a river city bikes sticker as they were each purchased new there.

Each bike also had spd type pedals. If there is any thing else you can think of let me know. I also have the serial numbers if that helps at all.

In the way, or right-of-way?

“Cars are in the way!” goes the refrain from one song by local bike-punk band The Pheramones.

The first time I heard the song this seemed pretty far out in left field, but the more I think about it the less crazy it sounds. Cars take up a lot of space, they’re loud, fast, dangerous, ubiquitous, and primarily used for tasks to which they’re patently unsuited—like short runs to the store, trips downtown, pleasure cruises, and as mobile offices.

Let’s face it, cars really are in the way.

So why does The Pheramone’s song sound so radical? Maybe because we are used to giving cars priority of place in our lives and our public space, to the extent that we see ourselves in their way.
