Last night, Juli and I picked the first-ever BikePortland.org Benefit Raffle winner. Here’s how it happened:
- I printed up the names of all the entrants (if you bought more than one ticket, your name got printed once for each ticket purchased).
- I cut up all the names and put them in big bowl.
- Juli threw up all the names in the air and grabbed one out of the sky.
And the name she picked was…John Duffy from Morrisville, Vermont! Congratulations John! I hope you enjoy the bike.
To everyone that bought tickets, I give you my most heartfelt gratitude. Your support came at a crucial time and I really could not continue this site without it.
The response to the raffle was very encouraging. It gave me new energy to continue to improve and build on the success of this site.
The raffle would not have happened without Raleigh Bicycles, based just north of us in Kent, Washington. They donated the awesome “One Way” bike and have been cool and easy to work with all along. Thank you Reed Pike for helping me put this together.
And again, thank you, to everyone who entered the raffle. I’d say it doesn’t matter who won because we’re all winners…but that’d be way too corny.
I think it’d be fun to do this again…what do you think? I’m already working on some great prize ideas…
Thanks for reading.

I’m trying to be happy for the winner, though he seems quite far from Portland. 🙂
Congrats, John – having spent a few winters bike commuting in Vermont, I hope you can fit some really good nubby tires on that puppy!
I find it appropriate that someone from the state with the motto “Live Free or Die” won – what’s more free and liberating than riding a bicycle?
As a side note, I think it’s great that people from whole different states are contributing to Jonathan’s site.
Um, Matt, that’s New Hampshire . . .the last place a Vermonter wants to be accused of living 🙂
What’s the diff. Cecil?
You can bet they’re all pot-heads and phish addicts.
“You can bet they’re all pot-heads and Phish addicts”
Unlike, say, Oregon?
John,
What on earth brought you to this site? Put some studded tires on that thing and you just got yourself the best winter bike in town! Derailleurs + slush + salt = ick. Oh, how I miss REAL winters…
Matt and Qwendolyn,
New Hampshire and Vermont may be spooning geographically, but so are Northwest and North Portland. You should have a passport on hand to cross the Connecticut River. They’re totally different worlds.
Jonathan, I hope your first raffle was a roaring success. It’s great that someone all the way from Vermont was interested enough to enter. Congratulations John Duffy!
Jonathan said “I think it’d be fun to do this again…what do you think?” Yes, please. Any way you could raffle off a Bike Friday? I’ve been wanting a folding bike for awhile and they’re kind of local…
Everyone loves a raffle. And if it helps keep the site goin’ – raffle it up yo.
And we get to learn some geography too.
Duffy here in Vermont, Thankyou BikePortland, thankyou Jonathan. What a wonderful site it is. Not much public trans here in rural Vermont so walk hitch drive or ride your bike. Nasty salt on the road all winter to melt the ice ,, ruins everything, especially derailers and such. Cars rust out in no time. My dream is to get back to Portland and buy a Volvo 740 wagon with no rust. But now I will have a new bike to ride . this will let me keep my Klien road ,my Rans Velocity squared and our Bike Friday Triple in the Barn and out of harms way. Every other month I am in NYC. I commute from Brookyn to Queens and I think The Raleigh ONE WAY is going to be the perfect bike. I plan on taking it on the Amtrak train to get to the city , so it will be wonderful to not worry about bending anything and NYC is pretty flat compared to Vermont. There have always been a lot of fixies in NYC ( not in Vermont though) ,but now it seems like all the local shops are in line I rode the Specialized Langster and the Giant ,but was worried about the lifespan of that aluminum frame. I.tend to crash a bit when I ride in the city , and as I am approaching 56 years I want a more comfortable ride… I had both wrists operated on this spring to releive the carpal tunnel s . That’s why I had to ride a recumbent the last few years. Now thanks to modern surgery and BikePortland I will once again ride fixed on my new black Raleigh One Way. I was building a fixed for myself out of an old fugi and had just started to redish a wheel, that bike will be donated to some kid at the local High School… Thank You Again BikePortland and Raleigh John Duffy ,Vermont Hi to Laura Cambell Fitzpatrick some where at a library in Portland and Eban Goodstien at the University,
Carl,
And a passport to cross the Columbia to Vancouver, WA. Now there’s a different world.
Hey John, congratulations! I had my heart set on winning that bike but it sounds like it went to someone who will put it to great use. It looks like a comfortable ride and for those of us who are already receiving those AARP solicitation letters, comfort is very important!
Jonathan, I thought the raffle was a great idea and I’m all for you doing more of them if it helps keep BikePortland.org up and running. I’ve come to rely on you to keep me informed about what is going on in my community so please keep up the great work you are doing!

Hey Jonathan,
How many tickets in all were purchased for the bike that John won?
