Photo of the year, an airport bike shuttle, and brazen bike theft

With all the craziness around the radio show fiasco I want to lighten things up with some fun tidbits from my inbox.

First, check out the photo below that was forwarded to the Shift email list:

[Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams]

The man on the mini-bike is City Commissioner Sam Adams. He’s clowning around with the Zoobombers in front of City Hall during the Made in Portland Bike show.

I met with a reporter from the Austin American Statesmen this morning to discuss how Portland has become such a bike mecca. I should have just showed her this photo, it says a lot about what makes Portland such a unique bike community.

This next little tidbit was also sent to the Shift list. There’s a budding Portland entrepreneur that has posted a new service on Craigslist. He’s offering a shuttle to the airport…by bike!

Check out this photo of his ride. If anyone takes him up on his offer, I’d love to hear about it.

And from the streets of New York City comes the latest YouTube phenomenon. Check out this video of some guys hacksawing, grinding, and cutting bike locks in broad daylight! They are brazenly stealing bikes and no one even notices (well except one guy). These guys are only doing this to show how rampant and easy bike theft is. They are not thieves.

Keep your eyes open and don’t let this happen in Portland! If you see a bike theft in progress the best thing to do is call 911.

For the record, in that utube video, the Neistat brothers (same guys that did that graffiti about ipod batteries dying after a year and not being replaceable) actually placed those bikes there before they were stolen. I think they were trying to show how vulnerable bikes are, especially in New York where there are standard 120v plugs accessible in the unlocked bases of street lamp poles. They are not criminals. We should thank them.

Thanks Grobbins,

Major oversight on my part. I’ve added to the post.

Woo hoo – that’s me and my daughter in the background of the photo of the year. I could tell I was witnessing “history in the making.” What a wonderful day that was. Thanks, Sam!

I don’t know why, but people tend to look much sexier on minibikes…

Thank you for the lighter side, Jonathan.

I imagine you’ve gotten some of the darker side directed at you lately that we don’t see. What a pain. Aah, but you’re tough and it’s for a good cause… 🙂

I’m cheering you on…

The Neistat Brothers have several excellent videos, some of them bike-related. The YouTube video was ripped off from their website at neistat.com. The Holland Tunnel video is another good one. Not quite as rad as Lucas Brunelle’s “drag race NYC,” but still pretty good.

The taxi-bike guy is the same fellow who has been trying to increase pedal-delivery rather than petrol-delivery of Meals on Wheels:

I saw him today (well, yesterday, it’s Wed now), he’s also very active helping with Food Not Bombs. Yay Vlad!

Speaking of which, I saw a band called Truckstop Honeymoon a week ago, and they played what has to be the absolute best bicycle delivery theme song I’ve ever heard – aptly named, “delivery boy”. Check it out if you get the chance.
