A few hours ago, an employee of Portland-based bike manufacturer, Mountain Cycle left a suspicious comment on my recent post about the Specialized/Stumptown Saga. The employee wrote, “I don’t think Specialized will be bothering Mountain Cycle any longer. More news to follow…” Then, after being prodded by another commenter, he added, “I have not been given permission to make an official statement.”
Now, I notice there is a post on a popular mountain biking forum site that says Mountain Cycle employees have been given notices and that “there is no more Kinesis USA, or Mountain Cycle.”
Thought I’d share the link to one of my most popular posts ever (currently ranked 5th out of 674). It’s a little report with photos of when Sara Stout and I each moved a full keg of beer (180lbs!) from Widmer Brewing in North Portland to the Clinton Street Theater in Southeast.
As a side note, I made a postcard out of one of the images and recently sent it to Rob Widmer. Turns out he’s a devoted bike commuter and he replied by saying, “if you ever want to talk bikes and beer, just let me know.” Cool.
Here’s the post, “360 lbs of beer…by bike!”
Very intersting post over on Sam Adam’s blog. It concerns the possibility of moving the Sauvie Island Bridge – which is slated for demolition once the new one is built – to Northwest Portland. They’re trying to decide if the span should be re-used to create a bicycle and pedestrian only bridge across the 405 freeway at NW Flanders Street. Someone even made this cool digital mock-up of how Flanders might look with the bridge in place.

my blue (early 80s) schwinn varsity was stolen off a front porch at about 10 pm last night in north portland.
its a distinctive bike – medium blue w/ the original clear blue handle bar tape (unraveling a bit at one end). the decals are mostly scraped off.
at the time of its departure it had a rear bike rack (with my u lock on it), a velo seat and a yellow bike bell.
please please please contact me if you have any info about my beloved bicycles whereabouts!
thank you.
aside from it having full black tires, it looks quite a bit like this bike:
Citing “safety” concerns, the Oregon Deparment of Transportation (ODOT) has proposed a ban on bicycles that would make it illegal for cyclists to ride on or next to certain sections of Metro area freeways.
You might have seen the Bike to Blazers Night Ride in the Willamette Week. If not, I’ve scanned it for your viewing pleasure. They even made up a nifty little bike graphic to go with it.
Unfortunately they left out contact information and they included a few facts about the ride that I want to clarify:
If you would like to be involved with the future of the Sellwood Bridge, Multnomah County is recruiting volunteers to serve on a Community Task Force. It would be great to have some bicyclists on this committee. Here’s more information about the task force followed by a PDF of the application you can download:

My new Trek 7500 FX (bought in December 2005, when my last commuter bike wore out from years of use) was stolen Friday evening from the corner of N. Greeley and Killingsworth. This new bike was — until Friday — my primary means of transportation.
I will give a reward for anyone who helps me get it back, no questions asked.
Distinguishing characteristics:
1) Maroon and black bike with scuffed silver handlebar-ends, and with a large black sticker on the left side reading approximately this: “Bicycles allowed full lane, ORS 814…”
2) It has my name (Kayes) etched in two locations on it: one is on the front, just under the Trek logo. I’m keeping the second secret until I see the bike, in case the thief reads this and grinds down the first.
3) And of course, I have the serial number!
Call Dave at 503.745.9162. Like I said, no questions asked. I need my bike back. I have filed a police report and can supply the case number, as well as the bike serial number if necessary.
Thanks.
[Update: I’ve added a link to the press release and the date Remmers will take over]
The Community Cycling Center has named Susan Remmers as their new Executive Director. Remmers will take over on April 17th. Here’s more on Remmers from the CCC press release:
Sauvie Island is a cycling paradise that sits just a few miles North of downtown Portland. Back in my training days I discovered that including out-and-backs, there are close to 80 miles of flat, scenic roads to ride on. Perfect riding conditions, except for one thing…hostile treatment from motorists. Road rage, taunts, projectiles from car windows, and other dangerous situations are far too common.
This is a problem that is going to keep getting worse until something is done about it, and I don’t think we should wait until someone is hurt or killed before focusing our attention on a solution.
City leaders met with bike advocates at City Hall on Monday to discuss the strategies and projects they hope will lead to Platinum status (Portland is currently a Gold-level city and Platinum is the highest “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation given by the League of American Bicyclists).
