Portland’s Nutcase Helmets acquired by private equity firm

10 years after being founded by a former Nike employee, Portland-based Nutcase Inc. has been acquired by Bravo Sports Corporation.

The move brings Nutcase under an umbrella of 23 other brands owned and/or managed by Bravo Sports that includes well-known names in the skateboarding market like Kryptonics, Sector 9, Pro-Tec, and Vision Street Wear. Bravo also owns children’s scooter brand Pulse Performance Products, holds major licensing agreements with Marvel, Nickelodeon, Disney/Pixar (and others), and holds exclusive rights to license, manufacture, and market E-Z UP tents. Bravo Sports is backed by Transom Capital Group, a private equity firm based in Los Angeles.

Nutcase was founded in 2006 by Michael Morrow. Over the past decade the company has grown steadily and has become a leading helmet brand known for their focus on eye-catching designs. After establishing a strong foothold in the U.S. market, Nutcase made a big push into Europe in 2013 and now has distributors in over 40 countries worldwide. In February of this year the company hired its first-ever CEO and a few months ago Nutcase made the decision to drop their motorsports helmets to focus exclusively on bicycling helmets. (more…)

Nutcase hires a new CEO

This is big. Portland-based helmet company Nutcase has just hired a big-name CEO. It marks a giant step for the company that had been run by its founders — Michael Morrow and Miriam Berman — since 2006. Not only that, but the new CEO, Scott Montgomery is kind of a big deal. Montgomery comes to Nutcase after being CEO of cycling apparel company Club Ride. Before that he spent over 30 years at Cannondale before leaving in 2003 as its vice president to become the general manager of another bike manufacturer, Scott.

With Montgomery’s experience, Nutcase is sure to hasten its growth and expansion. Next on the company’s radar? “Lifestyle products.”

As Portland becomes famous in Japan, local firms will show off bike products

Japanese bike lovers.

Portland is, city officials say, big in Japan right now. Two admired local bike accessory makers are looking to ride that cultural wave.

Fashionable headgear design firm Nutcase Helmets and Walnut Studiolo, a maker of custom leather products, will send their owners to Japan next month as part of a delegation of nine local businesses that are lining up distribution in the world’s fourth-largest economy.

The one-week trade mission on April 13-19 is organized by the Portland Development Commission, the city’s economic development agency, to “make the most of Japanese interest in all things Portland,” as its website says. Grants from two state trade programs will pay some of the cost for participants.


Helmet company Nutcase announces big plans for Europe

Portland-based helmet company Nutcase Inc., has announced major plans to extend their brand into Europe. The company, launched in 2006 by graphic designers Michael Morrow (formerly Nike’s Global Creative Director) and Miriam Berman, has gained a strong foothold in the U.S. market with their urban-focused bike helmets.

In a statement released today, Nutcase said they’re partnering with outdoor sport distributors, “covering all major European markets.”

“The Nutcase brand has had a love affair with European customers for over five years now, and our romance with Europe is only just beginning,” says Morrow. (more…)
