Bike to Blazers is set: Rally, ride, and more!

Mark your calendars and buy your tickets, because Bike to Blazers is going to be awesome this year. On April 14th, the bike and basketball worlds will collide, resulting in a fun community event that will (hopefully) become an annual Portland tradition.

Why bikes and Blazers? Why not? Both are a major force for good in our city and by tying them together, great things can happen. The Blazers want to be the “greenest” team in the NBA and a big part of their effort is to encourage more biking to games. From an advocacy perspective, putting bikes front and center at the Rose Garden, and tying biking more closely to the Blazers organization, is a great way to reach a lot of folks who don’t usually hear about how fun and useful bikes can be.

Bike to Blazers

Here we go Bla-zers!

At the event, we’ll kick things off with a rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Then, we’ll retrace Bill Walton‘s bike commute to practice (for the uninitiated, Walton led the Blazers to a championship in 1977 and he was known for his love of bicycling). Once we get to the Rose Garden, we’ll join a mini bike expo at the commons area near the arena’s main entrance. As fans enter the game, they’ll get a healthy dose of biking: free maps and other goodies, custom bikes to gawk at, and more. We’ll make signs (gotta be ready for our big moment on the jumbotron!) and hang out before filing into the game where 100 lucky people will sit together and cheer on the Blazers from the official Bike Section. Whew!

We’re planning a bunch more stuff for this event, but those are the basics. This is a family-friendly event and the great folks at the Bicycle Transportation Alliance are on board to help make sure the little ones on bikes have a great time too.

This is their last home game of the regular season and it’s against the Golden State Warriors.

If you’d like to join us in the Bike Section, visit our Bike to Blazers event page for ticket buying information (or, cut to the chase and visit this Blazers link and enter promo code “bikeblazers”). Stay tuned for more details (did I mention one lucky person will win a Bill Walton autographed helmet!?).

Ben,
They’re playing the Golden State Warriors.

JBird,
If you bought them online through the “bikeblazers” promo code … than yes, that’s the bike section!

I got mine! They gave me section 303, is that the bike section (1st 100)?

Well of course he doesn’t need to include the team they are playing.

Any Blazers fan would know that the 14th is the last game of the regular season – against Golden State Warriors. I am sad that I will be out of town, otherwise I would defintely attend! Go Blazers!! (and bikes)

S-tweet! 303 must be the bike section. Wouldn’t it be neat if they gave us those same blazer bike bells that were handed out at a game a few weeks ago? One can dream as a rollin-Blazer-fan…
Go Blazers, by bike!

I’ve heard that they won’t be giving out Blazer bike bells at the start of the game like they did recently, but there may be bike goodies at the meeting point at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Very cool! I also like the Blazer pinwheel logos that someone has stenciled into some of the bike path markings around the Rose Quarter area.

Has it really been four years since the original? I look forward to doing this again. Thanks for bringing it back.

Got mine as well. But can I express my burning anger at a $22 ticket actually costing 50% more after the “convenience fee” and “at home printing fee”? WTF??!!?!?!

Hey, it costs them a lot of money when you print your own ticket!

I already had a ticket. Looking forward to the game!

I cover the games for the Mercury and often bike to the Rose Garden. There are VERY limited spots to lock up near the arena. Are they going to set something up to accommodate everyone?

Hey Ezra,

glad the event is on your radar… as for parking, the Blazers are already in touch with BikeRacker about some temporary racks. Don’t worry folks, you’ll have a place to park. Back in 2006, they opened up the Coliseum and gave us special, indoor, secured parking!

And L,

I hear you about the ticket fees. Unfortunately no easy way around that. Glad you’re coming!

For some reason, stupid Ticketmaster keeps asking me to activate cookies when cookies have always been activated on my Chrome browser. So I’m not able to purchase them on-line. Anyone else have this glitch?

To avoid ticket fees, you can either fax, call, or mail in your order to Lisa Swan. There will still be a $5 fee but it will be for the entire order and not per ticket. They will mail you your tickets or I think you can pick them up at the box office.
