Seen in Portland: “Dutch” on a tall-bike and lucky kids

As many of you who already know, all sorts of interesting things can be seen while riding around a city.

I’ve been trying to snap photos of random sights on the bikeways around Portland more often. Here are three things that caught my eye in the past few days…

I spotted this woman and her child (didn’t actually chat with them) crossing N. Interstate Avenue this morning. The bike looks like a Haley Trike — in fact, I think I’ve ridden it myself (small world!). What I love about this is how it captures so many things: taking your kid to school by bike, using a cool trike to do the job, and of course, mixing it all with politics. Nice.

And then there’s Jon Paglia, A.K.A. “Dutch”. I rode by him over the weekend while out riding with my family. I met Dutch a few weeks ago when I accompanied him and a few other thrill-seekers on my first experience with Gravity Biking (full story soon).

In the photo above, Dutch is rolling what looks to be a freshly painted tall-bike (love the gold!) and I bet he’ll be riding it in the St. Johns Parade on Sunday along with a few of his “North Freak” bike club friends.

This is Martina and Karl Fahrner in Southeast Portland last Saturday. Martina is one of the co-owners of Clever Cycles. She was riding this awesome Kidz Tandem, made by Brown Cycles in Grand Junction Colorado. Juli and I are thinking that tandem will be our next family bike purchase so we stopped and chatted about it with her. We’ve got to schedule a test ride!

That’s it for now. I’ve always got my camera in my pannier (or on my back) and I’ll be sharing more scenes from Portland’s bikeways in the future…

Sir,

Please never post a photograph of a gut hanging out below a tie-dye cutoff shirt under the the pretense of interesting things you\’ve seen. I could have gone the rest of my life without ever seeing that image.

Thanks.

Hey Jonathan,

Little Cougar and I took the Kidz Tandem for a test ride a couple weeks ago. He loved it! As we finished up and were pulling back into the shop he said in his most hopeful voice, \”Daddy, are we going to take this home today!\” Ugh.

Tues after riding home from the races at PIR, Little Cougar says completely out of the blue, \”Daddy I hope we have the money soon to buy a Kid Tandem.\” Double Ugh.

I have some small reservations about it, but kids loooooooove \’em. And what the heck, that\’s who it\’s for right?

gotta love the body hating bikers, its almost like being a vegan who kicks kittens.

It pretty simple, if you dont want to see porn get off the internet.

Heard there was one of these riding along Willamette Blvd this morning… Hope to try one out soon. Rumor is that these folks have relocated from Colorado to Salem? Is that correct?

Yeah! Go dutch!

I don\’t know about the North Freaks, but if you go to the St Johns Parade, don\’t miss the \”Broken Bike Mounters\”… I bet that, if there are prizes, they are already taken!

If people don\’t want to see naked guts, then perhaps I should post a photo of myself in the buff under the lighted clear plastic raincoat!

But I don\’t know how to post pictures here. Can someone please clue me in?

That is me on the Haley Trike and yes you rode it when the previous owner had it. I was looking for a way to haul a 6 and 2 year old around and a friend had this for sale. So far it is a blast and the hard part is getting the 2 year old to get out of the bike after the ride is done. We are going to fit it with a seat so that they can see better and I may never be allowed to park it. We are planning to ride it in the St Johns parade this weekend.

It has been really wonderful to have the kids up close to me. We can really carry on some wonderful conversation and they are able to see more than they do in a trailer.

This week at Beach School we have had a lot of participation in Bike, Walk and Transit to school. One family showed up on a new Kidz Tandem which looks like fun.

Hey, it\’s great to see a Haley Trike on here! I was friends with Stephen in college and we both were pedicab drivers in Savannah. I think about him whenever I see cargo bikes and it\’s great to finally see one of his bikes out here. In Savannah when he first started making his trikes and riding them around, people just looked at him like he was crazy, hell… they looked at all of us bike riders like we were crazy. Personally, I like the craziness here.
