Hotel Monaco (on the corner of SW 5th and Washington) in downtown Portland offers some nifty package deals.
Their latest is the “Carless Vacation”. It’s linked to from their home page with the headline, “Planes, Trains, and no Automobiles” (gotta love that huh?).
Here’s what their “Carless Vacation” package includes:
- Accommodations for Two
- Reimbursement for Trimet MAX Light Rail passes between the airport and hotel
- Seasonal “Picnic Basket Lunch” for two from Red Star
- All day bicycle rentals for two
Hotel Monaco has also been recognized by the City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development with a BlueWorks Award for recycling and sustainability.
It’s great to see a promotion like this from such high-end hotel.

Sounds like a good place to stick out of town relatives.

I think the idea is great, just the sort of thing more businesses could be doing to encourage people to stay out of a rental car and explore the area on bike or foot.

Cool idea. But then I checked the rates.
The "Carless" package costs $80/night more than the "Park It in Portland" package, which includes free car parking. Of course, the carless package includes lunch and two bike rentals.
