New location, major renovation for Weir’s Cyclery

I was out in St. Johns over the weekend and I stopped by the new Weir’s Cyclery. Weir’s, which originally began as “Weir’s Bicycle and Fix-it Shop” has been family-owned and operated since Gordon Weir founded it back in 1925. The shop is currently in the midst of renovating a brand new location and I wanted to get the lowdown from current owner, Steve Weir.
The shop is open for business on the corner of Charleston and Lombard Streets in St. Johns. All bikes and parts are displayed in the basement for now, while the main floor is undergoing a complete remodel. Also in the basement are the workshops of two local framebuilders, Ira Ryan and JoJo Paquini.
I met shop mechanic “Bear” and he seemed to take the temporary digs in stride. I asked when he thought the remodel would be done and he said, “that depends on how many friends Steve can get to help him out.”
Back upstairs I peeked around the tarps and saw Steve hard at work, pulling up old flooring with a cro-bar. Steve stopped and introduced me to his work crew which included his friend Joe, his uncle, his stepdad, and his wife, Rita; a truly family affair.
Steve said he hopes to have the new, 6000 square foot space ready by mid-May. He’s planning a big opening celebration to coincide with the St. Johns Parade on Saturday, May 14th.
