The Bryant Street Bridge over I-5 in North Portland will close for two days next week. The closure is good news; it means a project that we first reported on in August 2006 is finally moving forward.

The Piedmont Neighborhood has been working on this project since 2007. With a $50,000 grant from ODOT, neighborhood artists and volunteers will clean up and renovate the bridge in hopes of making a vital connection between communities more pleasant and popular.[Read more…]

As part of my daily work here at BikePortland, I track a lot of projects. The other day, prompted by a question from reader Jessica Roberts, I began to think about all the bike projects that are currently delayed and languishing for one reason or another.

Below are updates on five such projects. Each of them has been planned, discussed, and promised, but none of them have broken ground.

Bryant Street Ped Bridge to close for repaving

Jonathan Maus (Publisher/Editor) by on June 4th, 2008 at 9:37 am

As part of an ongoing effort to renovate and improve the Bryant Street Pedestrian/Bike Bridge, the span will be temporarily closed while City of Portland and ODOT crews complete some repaving work.

According to the Piedmont Neighborhood, the bridge will be closed from June 9-11 and they recommend crossing over I-5 via Portland Blvd/Rosa Parks Way or Lombard Ave.

This morning ODOT maintenance crews removed the bollards at the entrance to the Bryant Street Pedestrian Overpass.

This little known bridge is a key link between the Piedmont and Arbor Lodge neighborhoods in North Portland and it provides a safe crossing of I-5. However, in recent years it had become neglected and almost forgotten until a group of nearby residents received a $50,000 grant to improve the bridge through funds made available by the I-5 Delta Park freeway widening project.

As part of the Bryant Bridge improvement effort, the community has been working with ODOT to develop a master plan to identify specific improvements intended to make the bridge safer, more appealing, and easier to access.[Read more…]

It’s been over a year since I first shared the news that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was considering improvements to the ailing Bryant Street bike and pedestrian bridge.

Now, I’m pleased to learn that the Piedmont and Arbor Lodge neighborhoods — in close partnership with ODOT — are moving forward with their efforts to make the bridge safer, more attractive, and more well-known.[Read more…]

Yesterday I met ODOT transportation planner Joyce Felton. Joyce is in charge of the seven community enhancement projects ODOT is funding as part of their I-5 Delta Park Project.

One of those projects is the Bryant Street Overpass, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that crosses I-5 in North Portland between Portland Blvd. and Lombard. ODOT has allocated $50,000 to improve it and Joyce is looking to the community for ideas and plans for how to spend that money.
