Ten-hut! One-day ‘Bike Scout’ scavenger hunt will roll out Aug. 31

Bike Scout poster

Official poster for Bike Scout.

One of Portland’s best-known bike event planners is trying something new this year: A free citywide bike scavenger hunt game that she says is inspired by board games like Ticket to Ride and Agricola.

“Our original idea was to do it next year during PedalPalooza,” said organizer Ayleen Crotty, maybe best known as the woman behind Filmed by Bike, in an interview Monday. “And then my friend Matt said, ‘Why don’t we be some of those people who keep the fun going outside of PedalPalooza and put this on in August?'”

That was the beginning of Bike Scout, an all-afternoon event happening Saturday, Aug. 31 that’ll pit “troops” of three to five bike riders against each other for fun and prizes.

“Get your compasses, searching devices, friends, costumes and bike ready,” the event’s website reads. “You’ll circle the city on an expedition to answer riddles, find treasure, document experiences and conquer challenges in hopes of winning the coveted troop trophy.”

Crotty said this event was inspired in part by the Bike Walk Vote scavenger hunt organized during PedalPalooza by Lisa Marie White, which challenged participants to track down as many bike rides as they could in a single day.

50s Bikeway project delayed

for a quality bike route.

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation has announced a delay in the construction of the long-awaited 50s Bikeway Project. The $1.5 million, federally-funded project that will create an important north-south bikeway along 52nd and 53rd Avenues between southeast and northeast Portland, was originally slated to begin construction this summer. However, according to PBOT Project Manager Rich Newlands, the City received bids to complete the work that were “significantly above the project’s construction contract estimate.” This unforeseen situation means construction won’t begin until February 2014.

A sneak peek at the New Seasons Market coming to North Williams Avenue

New Seasons on Williams sneak peek-5

First time the bike racks have
been open for use.

New Seasons Market hosted an open house this morning for the media and community members to get a sneak peek into their new store on North Williams Avenue. I wouldn’t usually devote my morning to the opening of a new grocery store, but given the location of this store and its potential to impact the streets around it — from both a public space and traffic operation perspective — I figured it was worth getting an insider look. (Disclaimer: New Seasons is a BikePortland advertiser.)

What I found was a very pleasant surprise: New Seasons staff and management has made public space, community access, and bicycling convenience a top priority in the layout/design and retail offerings of their new store.

Set to open August 28th, the new store is located in the northern half of the lot bound by Fremont, Vancouver and Williams. It’s smack dab in the middle of one of the busiest bicycle corridors in the city and the evening rush hour on N Cook (to the south) and Williams is widely known as a chaotic headache for both drivers and riders. And the traffic demands will only intensify in the coming months as there are many new commercial and residential buildings popping up all over the place (including on the south end of the lot shared by New Seasons).

The hits in our detour-filled summer just keep on coming…

TriMet has temporary closures in place on the SW Moody Ave cycle track as part of their ongoing Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project. The closures started last week and will last through October 18th. DeeAnn Sandberg with TriMet Community Affairs says the closures are necessary to allow TriMet to install tracks in the roadway. SW Moody is a major corridor to the South Waterfront neighborhood (and points south), the Aerial Tram, as well as OHSU’s various patient facilities and offices.
