City’s ‘Green Loop’ could be ‘Like Sunday Parkways everyday’
From mortality to mortification, 25 years of bruises on PDX streets
Cathy Hastie is BikePortland’s lifestyle columnist.
What daily activity involves quick-twitch muscle action, practiced hand-eye coordination, thinking on your toes, hearty cardiovascular fitness and the ability to outwit competitors? It’s not kick-boxing at the gym.
If bike commuting were a sport, I would compete in the “masters” category. I have been biking to work for more than 25 years: approximately 7 miles per day, 240 days a year. With 42,000 miles on Portland’s city streets, you’d think I would have been injured by now. But I remain unscathed.
Well, almost.
Portland’s best (and worst) elementary schools for biking and walking
Slowly but surely, Portland seems to be edging toward its transportation goal for elementary schoolers: getting as many of them to walk or bike to school as the average American kid did in 1969.
For the last two years, progress has leveled off, just as the city’s goals for adult transportation have. But (much like workplaces) some local elementaries have been far more successful than others.

Image of same model with ‘highlights’ of possible identifying features:
A silver, visible and feel-able groove has been worn through the paint on the rear LEFT seat-stay.
The left handlebar was recently damaged in a crash, causing a large rip in the rubber and a chunky rubber flap.
The bicycle also had a sticker from the store (Lakeside Bicycles) on the down tube next to the gears.
Finally not as obvious, the seat-post had been sawed off to be shortened, so the saddle is very low.
