It’s East Portland Week on BikePortland!
In case you missed the few minor announcements, today is the kickoff of East Portland Week here on BikePortland. That means Michael and I are focusing our time and coverage on bike issues and news that impact people who ride bikes east of I-205 — and hoping to enlighten those of you who don’t.
Right now, we’re both working from the Starbucks on the corner of NE 102nd and Halsey (Gateway Town Center).
Why do this? Many reasons: For starters, both of us live in neighborhoods relatively close to downtown. This means that our mental mobility maps are much different than folks who live further out (in other words, our perspectives on bicycling are central-city centric). It also means that we don’t know as much about the roads, the people, and the issues in outer east Portland — which is a huge part of our city that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.
Ride along on the Pioneer Century (photo gallery)
This past Saturday was an amazing day. It started bright and early as I woke up from my sleeping bag after a night spent under the trees at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby. I had arrived there late the night before in preparation to photograph the Pioneer Century. By the time I made it back to my own bed — well into Sunday — I had photographed spandex-clad riders on 100 miles of stunning rural Oregon farmlands and thousands of nude (and semi-nude) people riding through the streets of Portland.
The Monday Roundup: Self-defense with a bike, Tokyo bike culture and more
Here are the great bike links from around the world that caught our eyes this week:
Bikes as weapons: A 1901 magazine article about how to use your bicycle as a weapon against criminals spent the first 113 years of its life waiting for its illustrations to be turned into animated GIFs.
The Tokyo model: Tokyo has just 7 miles of bike lanes but a 16 percent mode share and almost everyone uses a bike. How on Earth do they do it?

Stolen From: The bike was stolen from a storage shed in the backyard of the house I live in. It’s located in the vicinity of Division and 82nd (Go figure). The back yard is totally enclosed by a ~7ft fence. The house next to us is for sale and vacant. I’ve called the cops numerous times to have them kick people out who are camped in the neighboring backyard. If you live next to a vacant house I suggest you secure your stuff as best you can; they are perfect cover for thieves. The view from the street to where they hopped the fence is completely obstructed by an overgrown lawn.

Five things to know about tonight’s World Naked Bike Ride

1) It’s not about sex. The WNBR is about loving your body, loving low-car or car-free life, demonstrating the power of bikes in mass motion, metaphorically conveying the vulnerability of people on bikes, experiencing the city in a new way and loving the friends and new friends you’ll see before, during and after. And although all of those things are almost certainly good for your sex life, you’ll be surprised how much fun nudity (or near-nudity) is without sex.
2) Nobody cares that your body is not perfect. Nobody’s body is perfect, so for one night, everybody’s body gets to be perfect.
