PBOT seeks input on Clinton Greenway

I suppose this would be classified as an announcement.

Rich Newlands of PBOT’s Clinton Greenway project will be coming to the Richmond Neighborhood Association meeting next Monday to ask the neighborhood its opinion on a proposed diverter east of SE 28th, as well as about the proposal to make 34th one-way north between Clinton and Division, with a contraflow bike lane southbound. Might be a good opportunity to voice an opinion or learn a bit more about the City’s thinking.

Mon., Oct. 12, 7 PM, Waverly Church, 3300 SE Woodward.

Bike riding musician and poet Ben Weaver coming to Velo Cult Thursday night

A bicycle has done much more than simply get musician Ben Weaver to his gigs; the act of pedaling has transformed his music and his mission.

Weaver, who’s set to perform Thursday night at Velo Cult, says something changed deep within him when he stopped touring in a car and started carrying his instruments in bags hooked onto his bike: “Instead of performing in traditional concert settings,” he wrote at BenWeaver.net, “I began building tours around natural spaces, specifically around water. I wanted to give back, build communities, and learn more from the people and places I visited.”

Centennial celebrations planned for Columbia River Historic Hwy

unnamed

One of our favorite local roads is 100 years old next year and the State of Oregon is planning a big celebration.

The Historic Columbia River Highway is known as “King of the Roads” and it’s more recently become known as a safe and beautiful way to explore the Gorge by bike. We’ve been reporting on progress to restore the road as a biking and walking haven for years. Planners hoped to get the road completed between Troutdale and Hood River by 2016. That’s not going to happen but they’re getting awfully close and there’s still plenty to celebrate.

Stay tuned to the front page and read the official press release about the centennial celebration below:

Broadway Bridge updates: A broken shoulder and upcoming closure

CQlp5RrUcAAT9O0

Terry Barton’s broken shoulder.

We’ve been following the Broadway Bridge re-painting project since the first complaints about it started coming in back in August.

The biking and walking pathways have been dramatically narrowed to make room for construction scaffolding. Despite flaggers on both ends to ferry users through, we’ve been worried that someone would get hurt. Now we’ve heard about the first (to our knowledge) serious injury caused by this narrow riding environment.

Portlander Terry Barton contacted us yesterday with the bad news: He suffered a broken shoulder on Friday afternoon after a crash caused by trying to navigate through the construction zone. Barton told us he’s been riding through the “mess” since it started and that he’s had several close calls with people both walking and biking. On Friday he was headed downtown when he miscommunicated intentions with someone walking toward him in the narrowed portion of the path. “I clipped him and then flew over my handlebars,” Barton shared with us.

Local traffic victims’ families will band together to form new voice for safety

A group of people who’ve lost family members on Portland-area streets has seen the success of their peers in New York City and is preparing to launch a similar organization here.

“I really am interested in behavior change, cultural change.”
— Kristi Finney

If you know anyone who has lost loved ones to traffic — whether the victim was walking, biking or driving — Oregon and SW Washington Families for Safe Streets is building its network in advance of a planned Nov. 15 launch.

Families for Safe Streets has been a key force behind New York’s rapid adoption of a Vision Zero policy that prioritizes traffic safety over traffic speed. This spring, NYC transportation advocate Paul Steely White told us he’d “never seen a campaign have so much influence over elected officials in such a sort time.”

Photos and memories from our 10th birthday celebration

(Photos: Margi Bradway unless noted)

Any room becomes a special place when it’s full of people you love and respect, and BikePortland’s 10th birthday party on Friday was one of the most special rooms we’ve had the honor of bringing together.

Nearly 300 people turned out. True to the spirit of the site, we welcomed citizen gadflies and academic brainiacs, bike-club party kids, family members of traffic-violence victims, indie framebuilders and a U.S. congressman.
