Rides planned from memorial sites to rally on Saturday

City hears from the public, presents ideas on enforcement, education
by PDOT at last night’s bike safety forum.
View entire presentation here
Last night in the Portland Building, Commissioner Adams and his Bike Safety Committee heard public testimony on bike safety issues and gave a presentation titled “Bike Safety in Portland” (view presentation).
From all reports (I was not able to attend myself), the comments shared were constructive and many people thanked Adams and PDOT for being responsive to these issues thus far.

Portland’s ‘cross scene.

Regrettably, I wasn’t able to attend last weekend’s cyclocross debauchery out at Estacada Timber Park (30 miles southeast of downtown Portland).
Not only was it the sixth stop in the Cross Crusade series, but the event also crowned the King and Queen of single speed cyclocross.
Yes, it was the first annual Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships.
If you’re curious what you missed, the photo at right should give you a clue. Then there’s this snip from the official press release put out by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA):
Sneak peek at See & Be Seen PSA
Here’s a sneak peek at a new public service announcement made to go along with PDOT’s “See & Be Seen” campaign.
The short and sweet film (a love story about visibility) was created (and donated to PDOT) by filmmaker Savannah Teller Brown of Teller Films. It will debut tomorrow at PDOT’s monthly Bicycle Brown Bag presentation and will be shown at the See & Be Seen bike light parade tomorrow night.

PDOT unveils concepts for bike boxes, intersection improvements
At last night’s meeting of the Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee, PDOT unveiled their initial concepts for adding new bike boxes and blue bike lanes to fourteen Portland intersections.
Commissioner Adams dropped in on the meeting and said he wants to move “quickly but prudently” and hopes to have these safety improvements (see all of them below), “approved and on the ground by the end of the year or sooner.”
These intersections are a subset of a larger list of known hot spots and, following a spate of recent high-profile collisions, were recently fast-tracked by Adams and his Bike Safety Committee for emergency improvements.
Car/bike collision in Milwaukie sparks engineering questions
According to media reports, late last night a bicyclist was involved in a head-on collision with a car in Milwaukie, a city that borders Portland to the south.
Here’s a snip from the Oregonian:
“Gabriel Lee King, 20, of Arcadia, Calif., was riding north on the southbound shoulder of Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard about 5:15 p.m. when his bicycle crossed 22nd Avenue and collided with the car, said Kevin Krebs, a Milwaukie Police Department spokesman.”
