The best printed bike map in the Portland region will soon be a collector’s item.
Metro announced yesterday that they will no longer sell the printed version of the vaunted Bike There! map.
The map was first published in 1983 and has gone through nine major updates. The ninth (and last) edition came out in May 2015.
In an email to shops that stocked the map, Metro’s Marne Duke said the decision was made because of, “A combination of the decline in demand of printed maps and the increase in free map offerings from local cities and counties around the region.”
The news was met with disappointment by many of our friends on Twitter:

As part of an effort to encourage safer use of electric scooters, the City of Portland will host a safety event this Thursday (9/13).

The Central Eastside Industrial Council (CEIC) says the city’s plan to update streets in the central city is moving too fast. The nonprofit is also urging its members to voice concerns over the potential loss of 250 auto parking spaces and fewer lanes for driving.
In a nod to its success and a commitment to create local off-road riding opportunities, the City of Portland has committed another $1 million to Gateway Green.

Alta Planning + Design, Inc. is an international consulting firm with a mission to create active communities. We specialize in bicycle, pedestrian, trail, park, greenway, and roadway planning, design, and implementation, in addition to outreach and education programs.
OVERVIEW
This web developer will be responsible for creating and maintaining websites (both standard and CMS) and other interactive web products. Websites may include web-map elements, and should be mobile-optimized, accessible, and localizable. Candidates should be committed to continual learning of new tools and methods; Alta will support ongoing training and professional development. We are looking to fill this position in our Portland office, but we are open to discussing other locations with the right candidate.
RESPONSIBILITIES + TASKS
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
-Collaborating with graphic designers to create and develop responsive websites from project specifications, design guidelines, sitemaps, wireframes, and website mockups.
-Integrate geospatial data that was developed by Alta’s GIS team using ESRI products into websites
-Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders including developing budgets, timelines, and appropriately planning resources to ensure timely and appropriately secure project deliverables.
-Excellent communication and project management skills. Ability to explain the web development process to non-technical/technical colleagues and clients, and walk them through the decision making and scoping process.
REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a combination of skills and experience including, but not limited to:
-3+ years of professional front-end development experience.
-Solid understanding of HTML, CSS (familiar with either SASS/LESS), and Javascript (familiar with ES6)
-Strong understanding of modern web development principles (grids, responsive design, progressive web applications) and/or frameworks
-Ability to develop & consume RESTful services for dynamic sites and web mapping.
-Ability to convert geospatial data from different sources (e.g. Shapefiles to GeoJSON) as well as comfortable working with web mapping frameworks (Google Maps API, Leaflet, Mapbox, or others)
-Ability to work with graphic designers to convert designs into functioning websites, including basic Photoshop/Illustrator skills
-Strong proficiency in at least one CMS technology (e.g. WordPress/Drupal) with the ability to manage setup and hosting, develop dynamic templates and custom themes, and maintenance on updates and load times
-Ability to program in one or more server-side languages (Nodejs, Go, PHP, Ruby, Python etc) with the desire to learn more as needed
-Experience with setting up websites on various web-hosting providers (DreamHost, MediaTemple, GoDaddy), basic server maintenance and troubleshooting, and domain renewals/transfers/certification
-Awareness of accessibility issues and guidelines, and commitment to making ADA compliant websites/apps
-Keep up-to-date with current and emerging web technologies.
PREFERRED SKILLS + CERTIFICATIONS
There are a number of additional skills and experience that would be beneficial to this position (but not required) including, but not limited to:
-Proficiency with a full stack framework (Ruby on Rails, Django, CakePHP, Laravel etc) a strong plus
-Experience with build tools such as Webpack, Parcel, Gulp, or Grunt.
-Proficiency with a SQL based database (MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite)
-Experience with billable-hours work as freelancer/consultant
-Experience as an in-house web developer

HGNR Inc. is the exclusive distributor of Dumonde Tech bicycle products in the U.S. We are hiring a full time Inside Sales and Customer Service Rep.
Reports To: President, HGNR Inc.
Job Overview: The National Sales Rep’s (NSR) primary role is the selling of Dumonde Tech bicycle products. A successful NSR will maintain and grow current dealer orders and solicit new dealers with the goal of increasing annual company revenue. With the guidance of the President the NSR will also maintain sub distributor relationships and as needed recommend new sub distributor opportunities.
Responsibilities and Duties:
• Sell HGNR distributed product to current and new dealers.
• Increase current dealer order volume and solicit new dealers.
• Promote product through promotional opportunities (events, teams, bicycle organizations) and sponsorships.
• Be the product expert for dealers and consumers.
• Attend trade shows and local bicycle events as needed.
• Keep current with competition and trends in the bicycle lubricant market.
Qualifications:
• Minimum HS graduate, post-secondary education a plus.

Starting salary: $31,200; with performance bonus’ available after the first year. Ultimate earning range is $35,000 to $45,000 per year.
Hours: Mon. through Fri., 40 hours a week. Weekends occasionally required.
Vacation: 4 weeks paid vacation after one year, 2 weeks floating and 2 weeks at the end of December 2019.

Kidical Mass PDX has a special event coming up this weekend: Kidical MASSIVE. I’ve written about Kidical Mass before and how much it means to me. Even as a seasoned family biker, there’s nothing I love more than riding with a big, slow, rolling, bell-dinging parade of kids on bikes.
What’s special about this particular Kidical Mass is that all 50 or so of the the Kidical Masses around the world host will an event on the same day.

This past week my wife Kate and I went door-to-door from NE 7th and Alberta to NE Thompson inviting people to an ice cream social to talk about the proposed Lloyd to Woodlawn Neighborhood Greenway. As I shared last week, the purpose of the event was to create a low-stress place for neighbors to meet each other and share their opinions about the proposal that would add diverters and create a new family-friendly bikeway between I-84 in the Lloyd to Dekum Street in Woodlawn.
For a 32-year-old, knocking on the doors of complete strangers is not the easiest thing to do.
Someone who lives in the Concordia neighborhood is so concerned about the crossing of NE 32nd and Killingsworth that they took it upon themselves place crossing flags on both sides of the intersection.

Portland City Commissioner Chloe Eudaly officially became in charge of the transportation bureau less than one week ago. But that didn’t stop her from showing up at a ribbon-cutting event this morning in east Portland. In a brief speech to mark the completion of the first phase of the 122nd Avenue Plan, Eudaly made it clear this oft-neglected part of our city would be a priority for her office. She also coined the phrase, “Transportation done right,” while listing several ways great streets can make a positive impact on Portland.
Eudaly was joined this morning by PBOT Interim Director Chris Warner, TriMet Chief Operating Officer Maurice Henderson, Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson, and former City Commissioner Steve Novick.
