A vision for bike access on Hawthorne Blvd

Detail of a mock-up of bike
access on Hawthorne. See full
image below.

Reader Paul Peterson sent over an inspiring mock-up of what SE Hawthorne Blvd could look like if Portland’s transportation infrastructure lived up to its sustainability and bike-friendly rhetoric.

Peterson is a locally based designer, director, and cinematographer. After he sent over the image (see full version below), I asked him to share more about why he was inspired to create it. “I did this mockup mostly for my own curiosity and out of frustration that Portland is supposed to be a platinum bike-friendly city, but has virtually no bike access in the commercial corridors,” he said.

Bob Huckaby moves forward on statewide bike registration, licensing measures

“Everybody has to be on the same playing field…I’ll share the road, but let’s share the laws too.”
— Bob Huckaby

Buoyed by support from across the state, Portlander Bob Huckaby is going full-steam ahead on a statewide ballot measure that would require all bicycles to have license plates and would mandate a bicycle law test for all adults who don’t already have a driver’s license.

We first reported on Huckaby last month, when he shared concerns over the City’s decision to partially close N. Wheeler Avenue at Broadway. Huckaby owns First Inc., a business just a few blocks away from the intersection. “Instead of making people obey the laws,” Huckaby shared with me on August 19th, “they’re penalizing everyone else, and that’s not right.” A few days after the closure, Huckaby told a local TV news station that he planned to take the bicycle license requirement to voters via a ballot measure.

Yesterday I sat down with Huckaby to discuss the issues and see where he stood on the ballot measure.

Broadway/Flint/Wheeler intersection, circa 1940

Flint/Broadway intersection 70 years ago.
(Photo: City of Portland archives)

The notorious Broadway/Flint/Wheeler intersection has been getting a lot of attention lately. Just today I rolled up on PBOT traffic safety staff and engineers observing the new partial closure of Wheeler, while a PPB officer talked with Paramount Apartments owner Betsy Reese. In addition to the closure, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has followed through with promises to business owners in the Lower Albina district by removing several on-street parking spots to make it easier for large trucks to turn in the area.

But a lot of work remains to make this area hospitable to all road users. It’s a mess and the addition of the new streetcar line — set to open later this month — will only add to the traffic safety issues.
