The Community Cycling Center and their partners are busy in North Portland today putting on the finishing touches to the new “bike hub” coming to the New Columbia neighborhood. The design/build project began just two weeks ago and the big grand opening is slated for tomorrow evening.

Dubbed simply “The Hub,” the CCC says the new building will, “provide affordable repairs, free advice, and act as a community resource center for all sorts of bicycle-based activities at New Columbia.”

Just back from a long weekend in Oakridge, Oregon — “the mountain biking capital of the Northwest”. Over five years ago I proclaimed (jokingly) that I wanted to move there and now I’m wondering why it’s taken me so long to return.

Oakridge is a small and quiet former logging town situated between rivers and mountains about 40 miles east of Eugene. The timber industry once dominated, but today the local economy is all about outdoor recreation. In August 2010 even National Public Radio noticed Oakridge and devoted a special report to the town that is trying to “reinvent itself.”

“I’m try[ing] to catch up on my work and you know I keep my eyes on the road, but I’m a busy man.”
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford after being asked if he reads while driving

Here’s the news and other interesting stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– Amidst the controversy of the USADA’s decision to strip Lance Armstrong of his Tour de France titles, donations to the Lance Armstrong Foundation have spiked.

– Per capita gas consumption in Oregon and Washington has dropped to a level not seen since the 1960s according to the findings of a Sightline Institute report titled Shifting into Reverse, which concludes the decline has more to do with decreases in personal vehicle travel and less to do with fuel efficiency improvements.

– A woman in Eugene is pushing to raise the driving age in Oregon after her son was killed by a 16-year-old driver saying we should instead, “Give [teens] bicycles to ride.”
