Description: On Saturday, August 18 at around 11:30 PM I locked up my red Vision recumbent bicycle with a kryptonite u-lock to a public street sign to attend a private party. When I left the party, which was just a few doors down from where my bike was locked up, all I found it was my bicycle helmet and the busted u-lock. I searched all around the neighborhood to see if someone ditched it (it’s hard to ride a recumbent bicycle if you’re not experienced), but I didn’t find it anywhere. I took a taxicab home.

My bicycle is a Vision brand recumbent bicycle, with under seat steering. The model is R40. The color is "Tango Red." It does not have any identifying stickers on it, nor do I have the serial number available. I had a black bike rack on the back, a red back reflector lights, and a blue "EL Wire" (looks like small neon) woven through the back of the seat for extra visibility. Because some of the cables were too long near the front derailer and pedals, I singed up the extra slack with a yellow reflective leg band

A business owner shares concerns about N. Wheeler Avenue closure plans

Despite a growing sense of urgency from the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), and calls from stakeholders, the public, this site and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance to close it immediately, North Wheeler Avenue is still open. Delaying action is a growing opposition from nearby businesses, who worry about impacts of the closure and who feel PBOT is choosing the wrong fix to the problem.

Last week, following yet another injury collision due to a right hook, it seemed like PBOT should act on their own findings that the intersection was inherently dangerous and should be closed “immediately”. PBOT was all but ready to drop down some temporary traffic barricades last week; but then it emerged that some business owners that use Wheeler to access their buildings were not happy with how the move would impact them.

ODOT project will add bike lanes to NE Sandy Blvd in east Portland

A one-mile stretch of NE Sandy Blvd will get
rebuilt with bike lanes and a new sidewalk thanks
to a $3.8 million ODOT project.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is set to stripe new bike lanes on a one-mile section of NE Sandy Blvd from NE 122nd Avenue to NE 141st in east Portland. Construction on the $3.865 million project begins this week.

Currently, Sandy has one standard vehicle lane in each direction, with unimproved shoulders on both sides. Cars park in the shoulders, which lack sidewalks or bike lanes and are full of gravel and potholes. The project will rebuild Sandy, making significant changes that include:

It’s been two weeks now since southeast Portland bike shop owner and well-known local bike advocate Marilyn Hayward was seriously injured in a collision while bicycling in Cornelius (just outside of Portland). Hayward was on her recumbent at the time and the collision occurred with a woman driving a Toyota Prius. Hayward sustained serious head injuries, a broken collar bone, and many cuts and bruises. Supporters say she’s “making good progress” and has been transferred from the ICU to the Trauma Recovery Acute Care Unit at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Friends and family credit her helmet for saving her life.

While she’s recovering from injuries, some attention is now turning to her medical bills. She has only partial insurance, so the expenses are already piling up. Friends released a statement yesterday, urging everyone to step up and donate for her physical therapy:

Follow up: Jefferson Smith’s driving record includes 7 speeding tickets – UPDATED

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Following our story last week, more information has been revealed about mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith’s driving record. His poor record, first brought to light months ago, was made public in greater detail by The Oregonian last week. Given that the way people operate their vehicles is an important transportation safety issue, I posted a story about this after reading about it in The Oregonian. The comment thread is full of a diverse range of reactions, and folks seem evenly split as to whether or not Smith’s driving record matters.

Today, Jefferson Smith shared a more extensive and detailed account of his driving record with The Portland Mercury (as well as sharing a Q & A about it in the comments). Now we know his record includes a whopping seven speeding tickets between 1994 and 2009:

6/27/1994 – Speeding – 95 in 55
4/2/1995 – Speeding – 69 in 45
5/17/1995 – Speeding – 80 in 65
10/22/1995 – Speeding – 80 in 55
7/20/2002 – Speeding – 52 in 35
1/28/2003 – Speeding – 75 in 50
1/11/2009 – Speeding – 40 in 25
