Daily roundup: Driving down, product news, scenic bikeway, jerk riders and more

Say hello to Oregon’s 9th State Scenic Bikeway.

Lots of local and national bike news today. Instead of letting it all pile up on my various story lists, I figured I’d drop it all into one post. So here goes…

— Some big national attention on biking today with NPR’s Talk of the Nation taking on the age-old mantra of cycling scofflaws. The piece, annoying titled, Cyclists: Do You Really Obey Traffic Laws?, was inspired by a feature article in Bicycling Magazine that does a post-mortem on the New York City bike lane backlash. The Bicycling article comes to the conclusion that the “enemy among us” is us. Here’s a snip from the article’s conclusion:

“It could be that all the new bike lanes anyone could build will only go to waste unless we realize that, as Podziba says, “We need a culture of self-enforcement among cyclists.””

This meme that cycling won’t be fully embraced by America until everyone acts like an angel while doing it is frankly ridiculous. I won’t go into details here, but check out this recent Grist article for more of my thoughts.

Portland’s Bike Walk Vote political action committee hosted a party last night in southeast Portland to introduce the community to the candidates they’ve endorsed. A huge crowd packed into Crank bike shop where candidates had tables set up to entice volunteers, pizza was consumed, and the conversations flowed as freely as the beer.

Yesterday evening Beaverton Police arrested a man who drove his car into someone on a bike, attempted to flee, and then aggressively confronted the rider. The altercation happened in the parking lot of Cedar Hills Crossing Mall on SW Hall Blvd.

According to a Beaverton PD statement, 22-year old Portland resident Derrik Fleming was in the mall parking lot and maneuvered his bike around a stopped car to make a left turn. When he did that, Christopher Williams, a 30-year-old resident of Beaverton, sped up from behind, came around the stopped car in the opposite lane and then slammed on his brakes right in front of Fleming.

“This action caused Fleming to crash,” reads the statement, “into the right rear of Williams’s vehicle. This crash caused Fleming to go over his handle bars and onto the asphalt of the parking lot.”

ODOT transformation continues: No more “highway division”

Sellwood Bridge Groundbreaking -17-17

ODOT Director Matt Garrett is moving forward
with changes at the agency.

Back in July I shared that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) had embarked on a major organizational shift with the creation of a new Active Transportation Section.

A memo from ODOT Director Matt Garrett sent to staffers on Tuesday, and a new page just published to their website, reveals that the agency is taking steps more steps in their effort to level the playing field for all modes of transportation. Put another way, they are — at long last — on a path to becoming a truly multi-modal agency.

Bike Walk Vote announces endorsements for City Council, Metro

Nolan gets the nod over Fritz
for City Council.

Political action committee Bike Walk Vote has just announced their endorsements for Portland City Council and Metro Council.

The group endorses Mary Nolan for Portland City Council Position #1. Nolan, a former Oregon state legislator, is looking to unseat incumbent Amanda Fritz. Bike Walk Vote Co-Chair Evan Manvel says Nolan, “has taken tough positions in support of green and active transportation.” Manvel also cited the “tough votes” Nolan took in opposition to “highway-heavy transportation plans” and her opposition to the Columbia River Crossing project.

For City Council Position #4, Bike Walk Vote has endorsed Steve Novick. Novick ran for a Senate seat in 2010 (which he lost to Jeff Merkley) and he is considered a relative shoe-in for this Council spot. His main challenger is neighborhood activist Jeri Williams. In announcing their decision, Bike Walk Vote Co-Chair Peter Welte said Novick, “has been a champion of public health for decades,” and that he, “deeply understands the intersection of community health with healthy transportation and land use planning.”
