Hopworks’ new BikeBar on North Williams Avenue seems to be an instant hit. The small restaurant in the ground floor of the Ecoflats apartment building between N Shaver and Failing, is just the latest new bike-centric business to spring up on what Hopworks’ owner Christian Ettinger calls the “Williams bike highway.”

Parks Bureau watching, waiting to re-open Esplanade – Updated
Portland Parks & Recreation officials say they continue to monitor the water levels on the Willamette River and that a re-opening of the Eastbank Esplanade could come by the end of this week.
The floating portion of the Esplanade path (south of the Steel Bridge) has been closed since May 31st when PP&R decided to close it due to the highest water level the structure has seen in its 10 year history. Last week, Parks estimated that the river would reach 16 feet — which would allow them to re-open the path — by tomorrow.
Parks spokesman Mark Ross now says a re-opening tomorrow is “doubtful” and that the earliest it will re-open is most likely Thursday.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is considering other options for how to improve bike access on N. Willamette Blvd after hearing loud and clear from adjacent homeowners that they don’t want to lose on-street parking.
The goal of PBOT’s North Willamette Boulevard Bikeway Development Project is to create a “low-stress” bicycling environment and improve bikeway access on this key link between North Rosa Parks Way and Woolsey (it’s one of five projects the City announced in May 2010). Since this project was first identified over a year ago, the idea was to create more space for bicycle traffic by re-allocating space currently being used for on-street parking.
‘Three colors of box wine. Three stages’ – Tour de Franzia ride recap

(Photos: Michael O’ Leary)
“The goal is to develop and refine our set of skills for on-road riding with external or internal box-wine loads. Three colors of box wine. Three stages. Might want to wear your helmet. Might want to bring cab fare money for your trip home.” — That’s how the first annual Tour de Franzia was billed on the Pedalpalooza calendar.
Below is a ride recap and photos by Michael O’Leary:
Metrofiets launches beer bike rental business

When local cargo bike manufacturer Metrofiets unveiled their “Hopworksfiets” back in September 2009, it was a sensation. The bike, custom made for Hopworks Urban Brewery to be a beer bar on wheels, was a media darling and even made it onto the Discovery Channel.
The bike itself was a smash hit, but it also saw huge demand as event organizers throughout Portland realized its popularity and beer-dispensing qualities.
Now the owners of Metrofiets have made version 2.0 and they’re getting into the beer bike rental business themselves.
Researchers look into connection between bicycling, consumer behavior

A research project at the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC, housed at Portland State University) is taking a closer look at how bike-riding customers and bike infrastructure (or lack thereof) impacts the business bottom line.
The principal investigator is Kelly Clifton, an associate professor at PSU. I sat down with Clifton last week to learn more.
