12th Avenue overcrossing plans moves forward, with concerns

explains his concerns with PBOT project manager
Ellen Vanderslice after this morning’s meeting.
(Photo © J. Maus)
After six months of meetings, analysis and negotiations, the City of Portland appears poised to implement changes that will improve bicycle access on and around the 12th Avenue bridge over I-84 in the Lloyd District.
At a meeting of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee for the Lloyd District Bikeway Development Projects this morning, a straw poll on whether or not the current plans (see them below) are “on the right track” was just one vote shy of unanimous.
Here are some highlights from the currently proposed plan (followed by official drawings):
Floating portion of Esplanade closure extended
This just in from Portland Parks & Recreation (see our story from Tuesday for background):
Eastside Floating Walkway to Remain Closed at Least Over the Weekend
(Portland, OR) –
A team of PP&R operations supervisors and engineers on-site this morning has determined that the floating walkway along the Vera Katz Eastside Esplanade from north of the Morrison Bridge to South of the Steel bridge shall remain closed to all traffic (bike, foot, boats) at least until Monday. The area affected is approximately 1000-to-1500 feet of floating territory that the rising water has made impassable.

7:00am Sisyphean Cruller Crawl – East Side
Join us for a mythic climb up one or two of Portland’s finest hills. We’ll haul breakfast to the top for anyone that makes it, and we won’t leave you behind. Moderate pace. Righteous struggle. Just rewards. Meet Wilshire Park , NE 35th Ave and Skidmore St
9:30am Mid-Week Gorge Ride
We’ll take off on the ride at 10am sharp, get there early for ride prep. Riding to quiet country roads and spectacular scenery is easier than you think. The Columbia River Gorge is just a short bicycle ride away. And you can totally handle it if you are an everyday rider. Bring a snack, water, and Trimet fare. Geared bikes recommended. Approx 40 miles round trip. Watch for lambs. Meet at Ruby Junction/E 197 MAX Station, SE Burnside St and SE 197th Ave, Gresham.
Catching up with the 50s Bikeway project
The long-awaited 50s Bikeway Project — which will use $1.5 million in federal funds to build a low-stress bicycling environment along a 4.3 mile corridor from SE Woodstock to NE Thompson (near Sandy) along 53rd and 52nd Avenues — is entering its final phases of public outreach.
At a meeting of the Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) last night, PBOT project manager Rich Newlands asked for the committee’s endorsement of the project (which they gave unanimously). Newlands said PBOT has already won support from seven of eight neighborhood associations the project runs through. The only remaining neighborhood left to vote on the project (Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association) is set to vote on it tonight.

Optimize your Ride: Fighting brake dust (and that horrible screech)

(Photos: Daniel Sharp)
When you break it down, your bicycle only needs to do two things: Go and stop.
In our last column we discussed the go (chains), today we’ll delve into the stop (brakes).
The Pacific Northwest is known for many things, but one of the most insidious is the slow, grinding away of bike rims and brake pads. I’m no scientist; but my deduction? Our volcanic soils create tiny pumice particulate, which on rainy days get splattered all over your rims and brake pads turning them into tiny grinding stones.

City to break ground on 80s bike boulevard project next month

coming to east Portland.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is close to the start of construction on a new “neighborhood greenway” that would parallel 82nd Avenue in northeast and southeast Portland. PBOT has put out a request for proposals to find a construction firm to start and the project is scheduled to begin next month.
The three-mile route would mostly use 86th and 87th Avenues and would stretch from NE Hassolo Street (near I-84) to SE Bush (south of Powell). The project is one of many neighborhood greenway projects PBOT is working on throughout the city (their plan is 15 miles of new neighborhood greenways (a.k.a. bike boulevards) each year through 2013).
To create a more comfortable and accessible route that parallels 82nd Avenue (an ODOT-controlled arterial), PBOT will use the familiar tools of speed bumps, curb extensions, sharrows, speed bumps, cycle-tracks, tree plantings, new signals, signage, and so on.
