DOT Sec Ray LaHood’s latest “On the Go” talks bike safety, bike-sharing

We’ve got to hand it to US DOT Secretary Ray LaHood. Whether it’s showing panache by hopping up on a table for a speech at the National Bike Summit, or creating a buzz about biking on Huffington Post — this guy understands how to communicate and he keeps bicycles in the limelight while doing so.
In that same vein, Sec. LaHood just released his latest “On the Go” video where he answers questions posed to him via Facebook, Twitter, or on his “Fast Lane” blog. One of the three questions he answered had to do with bicycles. Someone asked, “Is DOT improving bicycle infrastructure? Bikes are for transportation, not just recreation.”

Event: Ride4CAP-Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic Wants YOU! (7/9/11)

On July 8th and July 9th, 10,000 bicyclists will embark on the annual 200 mile Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP). The event provides an excellent opportunity to promote wellness, to support the organizers at the Cascade Bicycle Club, and for the 3,000 teams to raise money or interest for a cause.
This year, Cascade AIDS Project will join the 10,000 riders and has formed the 3,001st team: Team CAP. CAP is still recruiting interested riders to join our team. There are several thousand STP riders from the Portland metro and southern Washington area; just do the math — if just a few hundred of you raise $500 each or more, CAP could raise over $100,000 for our essential HIV/AIDS services!
We’re also offering some sweet incentives if you join and raise money for CAP. These incentives include:
* Water bottle and Nike Drawstring bag for joining.
* Raise $200 and get your original STP registration fee refunded to you.
* Raise $500 and get a Team CAP cycling jersey.
* Raise $1,000 and get a gift certificate to one of 3 Portland-area restaurants.
To join Team CAP and start fundraising, go to www.ride4cap.org or contact Eric Shaffer at 503.278.3851.

The parking/biking trade-off: Q & A with PDC Director Patrick Quinton

bikeway on NE Holladay. One of the issues
with the project is how to deal
with on-street parking.
(Photo © J. Maus)
Last month, a representative from the Portland Development Commission (PDC) said they’d oppose any on-street parking removal on NE Holladay as part of a plan to create a high-quality bikeway on that street.
The announcement was a surprise, not just because the PDC is a City of Portland entity, but because parking removal is considered nearly essential to reaching the project’s goal of providing, “comfortable and convenient non-motorized access” from the Rose Quarter through the Lloyd District.
Optimize your Ride: Working on the chain, gang
Publisher’s note: This article was written by Tori Bortman. In the coming weeks, Tori will help you Optimize Your Ride by sharing her bike repair tips, tricks and perspectives.
Today’s topic: the chain.
The chain is one of the easiest parts to maintain on your bike; but for some reason, it’s also the most neglected. Maybe some of you are intimidated by chain-tenance? Don’t be. Here’s all you need to know…
Choose a good lube. Look for one that’s not too thick or thin, preferably with a solvent mixed in. My favorite is A.T.B. Lube (which stands for Absolutely The Best). I’m a fan because I want maintenance on my bike to take as little time as possible. Go ahead. Call me lazy (I prefer “efficient”).

Oregon Senate passes speed limit reduction bill

cities to lower speed limits
on residential streets.
(Photo © J. Maus)
House Bill 3150 took a very big step toward becoming reality today. The bill, which would give cities the authority to lower the speed limit on residential streets by five miles per hour (from 25 to 20 mph in most cases), passed a vote on the Senate floor by 26-3.
HB 3150 passed the House by a wide margin back in March and has been working its way through the Senate committee process ever since.
