The weekend is right around the corner. We’re almost afraid to talk about the nice weather we’ve been having; but let’s hope some of this sun sticks around for the great events below.

We’re looking forward to a picnic and some great local bike racing at Mt. Tabor on Saturday, perhaps followed up by Sunday Parkways on Sunday. Yes, the summer cycling season is just getting warmed up. Check the events below and if we left anything out, feel free to shout it out in the comments.

Editorial: Bicycling, the forgotten piece of energy policy

Whose cars? Our cars!

An economy putting the pinch on pocketbooks, rising gas prices, foreign oil imported from terrorist havens, a bankrupt federal infrastructure budget — all of these factors (and others) are creating a perfect political storm that could lead to a significant change in U.S. energy policy.

With about 2/3 of our country’s oil consumption used for transportation, the energy policy proposals coming out of Washington D.C. correctly focus on how we power our vehicles. Unfortunately, they completely ignore the ability of the American people to power themselves.

There’s a huge disconnect in the White House and on Capitol Hill on this issue.

PBOT has once again decided to create a loop of streets in East Portland carfree for five hours this Sunday. This crazy scheme to force people out of their cars and into the streets to meet their neighbors and enjoy their community is called “Sunday Parkways”. Not satisfied with simply making streets carfree, PBOT has also invited organizations, food vendors, and entertainers to set up in the parks and streets.

Disappearing bike lane case settles out of court

Where the bike lane ends.

Remember the disappearing bike lane case? I’m happy to report that it reached a positive conclusion — at least in the civil case of Carmen Piekarski.

First, let’s go back to December 2009…

Piekarski was riding her bike eastbound on SE Hawthorne approaching SE 10th Ave. While in the intersection, the operator of a Toyota Prius, Ellen Metz, turned right and hit Piekarski. The right-hook collision resulted in several injuries for Piekarski and she spent months in physical therapy.

The Bryant Street Bridge over I-5 in North Portland will close for two days next week. The closure is good news; it means a project that we first reported on in August 2006 is finally moving forward.

The Piedmont Neighborhood has been working on this project since 2007. With a $50,000 grant from ODOT, neighborhood artists and volunteers will clean up and renovate the bridge in hopes of making a vital connection between communities more pleasant and popular.

In case you haven’t heard, Clackamas County voters soundly rejected (63-37 percent) a $5 annual vehicle registration fee that would have raised $22 million to help pay for the ailing Sellwood Bridge over the Willamette River.

The fee was passed by the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners back in December, but activist groups (including Americans for Prosperity) opposed the fee and organized to get the issue on the ballot.
