If last night’s meeting at Holgate Baptist Church was any indication, PBOT has its work cut out for them in selling big bike projects to outer East Portland residents. The Holgate buffered bike lanes have become a lightning rod and many residents that live near them shared their anger over the project with City staffers last night.

Exclusive: TriMet bus operator placed on administrative leave following blog post
blog post (before it was taken down).
TriMet has placed a bus operator on administrative leave after they determined a blog post about an interaction with a man on a bicycle that was published to the operator’s personal blog earlier today was inappropriate. TriMet has also referred the issue to the police and the District Attorney’s office.
TriMet bus operator Dan Christensen — a man known for his humor and writing talents who was just named one of Portland’s ‘Best People’ by the Willamette Week — posted a story to his “TriMet Confidential” blog earlier today titled, “PORTLAND! KILL THIS BICYCLIST!”

It started with this email from Lauren Hudgins:
Event: Bike Beaverton (8/1/10)
Event Name: Bike Beaverton
Event Start Date: 1 August 2010
Start Time: 1:00:00 PM
Web Site: http://www.beavertonoregon.gov/bike
Event Description: At 1 p.m., Bike Beaverton kicks off with a performance from Northern Alliance Drum Line. The Beaverton Police Department will hold a safety rodeo where children can have fun maneuvering through an obstacle course while learning new skills and safety practices. Bicycle mechanics from The Bike Gallery and Bike n Hike will perform safety inspections and Northwest Bicycle Council will fit and inspect helmets. The Northwest Bicycle Council will also be replacing damaged adult, youth and toddler helmets during Bike Beaverton while supplies last. Last year they were able to replace 70 helmets and expect to exceed that number this year.
A community ride will begin at 2 p.m. with three rides of varying difficulty to choose from: around the block, a six mile family-friendly ride and a 13-mile fitness ride. During the event, participants can enjoy the musical stylings of Amish Love Child and enjoy an ice cream social.

Rick and Trish Bradford are behind RestoreHolgate.com, a website that includes an online petition (which only nine people have signed since July 6th), forums, and information about the project.
The header of the site includes says it’s “A place for sharing ideas and information in our quest to return SE Holgate Boulevard to it’s Pre-“Buffered Bike Lane” state.”
Speed bumps coming to NW Germantown Road
on this stretch of Germantown Rd.
(Google Maps)
If you are one of the many people who enjoy riding down NW Germantown Road from Skyline Blvd., get ready to handle a few speed bumps toward the bottom of the route.
The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation plans to install five “speed tables” on Germantown between NW Bridge and Lilac Avenues this Saturday (7/24). The $16,000 project is being paid for by residents of the area who are concerned that people are driving too fast as they approach the Highway 30/St. Johns Bridge interchange.

Thieves make off with $5,000 worth of OBRA equipment in Eugene
at races throughout Oregon.

A truck full of equipment belonging to the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) was broken into earlier this week in Eugene. OBRA director Kenji Sugahara says as estimated $5,000 worth of equipment was stolen out of the truck while it was parked outside of Co-Motion Cycles in southwest Eugene.
An OBRA official and race promoter stationed in Eugene says the theft occurred sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday morning. According to Sugahara, the loss of equipment will have a significant impact. “Many items critical to racing were taken. This makes it difficult for our officials to score races and for us to provide equipment to our promoters.”
