Tonight: Get Together with Shift and Pedalpalooza

I’m really looking forward to our Get Together tonight. We’ll be at Plan B (1305 SE 8th) from 5:30 to about 8:00 (in the back patio if the weather stays dry) talking about Shift and getting the lowdown on Pedalpalooza 2010 (which starts June 10th!).

Shift is the Portland bike non-profit you rarely see in the headlines, but you’ve almost certainly heard of their work. They’re the minds and muscle behind things like the aforementioned Pedalpalooza (a 17-day celebration of bikes unlike anything in the world), our legendary Naked Bike Ride, Bike Moves, Breakfast on the Bridges, and much more.

And, like I’ll share tonight in more detail, Shift is the reason this site came into existence five years ago.

Breakfast on the Bridges - May 08-3.jpg

Shift does Breakfast on the Bridges
and a whole lot more.

And they do it all with no paid membership and no big donors. For mere pennies they have rocked this town with bike fun since Bike Summer came through here in 2002.

The idea for this Get Together is to introduce some of the key Shift volunteers that make the magic happen. We also hope to encourage a few more volunteers to step up and help them out. The night will be a fun, informal way to get amped up for all the big bike fun that lies ahead in June.

I’m bringing a bit of my Shift memorabilia to share and I’ll have stacks of limited edition BikePortland stickers, postcards, and the last few t-shirts we’ve got as door prizes. I’m also going to bring my fondest Shift memories (the epic, all-night Sushi Ride of 2006 being one of them) to share with anyone who cares to listen.

Join us!

It’s last Thursday on Alberta- and it isn’t raining. Any last minute chance the meeting could move to NE?

Due to a last minute schedule conflict, I won’t be able to go. Hope BikePorltand follows-up with indepth coverage. Pedalpalooza is likely the highlight for many in the bike world.

Soooo many good memories…

…meeting Kiran for the first time…seeing the Sprockets debut…the failed ‘serve me or arrest me’ bike tour of drive-thrus in NOPO, bike jousting Spiderman with the flaming Dead Babies on a desolate SE industrial street MCd by a guy in a Mexican wrestler mask…while being showered by fireworks…old PreBikePortland times…when we had to wait a month! for bike news to make it into a newsletter or worse to be a secret or missed opportunity.

…and more good time to come!
