Tigard council says City no longer required to put bike lanes on certain downtown streets
On June 23th, Tigard City Council voted unanimously in favor of planning code amendments that remove the city’s requirement to have bike lanes on specific downtown streets. Along with that decision, they also voted on a code amendment that allows them to put on-street motor vehicle parking on those streets where it was previously not permitted.
Prior to the vote, Tigard’s Transportation System Plan stated, as per their Bicycle Master Plan, that all arterial and collector streets should have a bike lane. The amended code now reads, “…with the exception of collectors within the downtown urban renewal district.”
In a statement released today, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) said they are “concerned” about the Council’s decision and the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition (WashCoBTC) emailed the City expressing their opposition.

BTA backs downtown Salem bike lane; community is split
“The more lanes I have, the more people I have… Once you put a bike lane in, it’s going to cut down a lane of traffic. That is my concern.”
— Krishna Bhaptarai, owner of Katmandu Foods and signer of a petition against the bike lane plan
Our story about a plan to re-stripe Commercial Avenue in downtown Salem with a bike lane and one less motor vehicle lane has exposed a wide range of opinions about the project.
The City of Salem plans to use funds from their 2008 Streets and Bridges Bond Measure to repave Commercial street through their downtown core and re-stripe with a new road configuruation (see existing and proposed configuration below). According to a document distributed at an open house about the project at the end of June, City planners say the project, “presents an opportunity…to address on-going concerns with the lack of bicycle facilities in downtown…”
Fraud hits local customers of online retailer Nashbar
after a security breach at
Nashbar.com resulted in fraud.

Northeast Portland resident Gabriel Tiller is sort of a bicycle renaissance man. He has won a national tall-bike jousting competition, taken top prize at the Zoobomb Century, earned a spot on the gravity-biking podium at the Maryhill Festival of Speed, he likes to do bike touring, and he has recently taken to mountain biking.
Most of the time, Tiller builds bikes from used parts lying around his garage or from the various sources around town. But often, he buys hard-to-find parts from an online retailer to feed his cycling habit.
Last week, he noticed several strange charges on his credit card that went to unfamiliar websites like “networkagenda.com,” “fedgrantusa.com,” and “gglprofit.com.” He immediately Googled them and found that there were many other people complaining online about similar fraudulent charges. A little more digging and he confirmed the culprit: Nashbar (also known as Bike Nashbar).

Oregon Manifest builder Q & A: Chris Igleheart
[This Q & A with Massachusetts-based builder Chris Igleheart was written by Portlander Otis Rubottom as part of our ongoing coverage of the upcoming Oregon Manifest event. Igleheart will be in Portland this October to compete in the Constructor’s Design Challenge. We’ll publish more builder Q & As in the weeks to come.]
(Photo: Slate Olson)
Chris Igleheart has a little bit of giggle behind his words. It’s easy to think of him as someone who does not fluster easily, which makes sense given his attention to detail, and his focus on creating bikes that fit and function across a wide range of disciplines.
From his time at Fat City to a stint in Oregon, to his base in Massachusetts, Chris has spent his life around bikes. With a reputation for functional, utilitarian steel bikes, he’s also gained attention for producing a selection of punishment-worthy steel forks. Chris is looking forward to building, and riding, one of his own bikes in the design challenge. It will be the first bike he’s built for himself.
Best idea yet for revamped “Made in Oregon” sign
The effort by University of Oregon to re-design downtown Portland’s iconic “Made in Oregon” sign is once again in the news. Now that they own the building it is attached to, UO wants to make some changes to the sign. The issue created a bit of a dust-up at City Hall and now the Historic Landmarks Commission has rejected the plans.
Meanwhile, Portlander Curt Gardner sent me over how he thinks the sign should be redesigned.
