Today, Google announced that their Google Maps’ Street View feature has been expanded to include Portland.
We now join 15 other cities who are lucky enough to have our every move watched by Google’s cameras.
A reader (thanks Craig!) sent me a link to the Street View of the Hawthorne Bridge and, lo and behold, there were a couple cyclists riding across it.
Street View is an amazing (and controversial) feature that lets you view ground-level, 360 degree views of streets. You can even pan, zoom, and rotate the images.

Plenty of cyclists on Madison eastbound to the Hawthorne and on the ramp onto the bridge as well!
Hm, make that \”when you\’re \’traveling\’ eastbound.\” Not so many when you\’re heading west, which is weird.

I saw the google street view car 3 times and tried to moon em each time! I must have busted the lens though cuz I don\’t see me anywhere. d\’oh!

Huh. Based on the shot of my house, they took it sometime in the beginning of August (I can tell by my contractor\’s sawhorses blocking my sidewalk). Cool.
My car is of course home because I bike all the time. If I make it through the winter without driving it more than twice a month I\’m selling it.
Dan (#9), I\’m with you, man. My mom has to remind me to drive my car once a week to ensure that the engine and tires don\’t somehow deteriorate due to lack of use. I bought the old thing last year out of work-related travel needs, but I rarely use it. Good idea to do away with the car if not really needed. In the meantime, how odd that we can view our bike trips over bridges and homes online…sort of Big-Brother-style scary, but also sort of fascinating/cool!

i have to agree with everyone that this is cool, but kind of spooky. looking at my home online, i feel like it\’s a step away from following the arrows on inside, through the kitchen….into the bathroom….creepy – and couldn\’t they have come by AFTER we spruced up the yard a bit? sheesh.

Google Earth is cool, but it seems to be going too far. It\’s kind of creepy to think that not only the surveilance is constant and everywhere, but also that anyone can be watching. And that\’s just the beginning…

I notice from the \”prostitute\” view that the only portion of 82nd Ave that is NOT covered in the \”Street View\” is the nearby area around certain… ahem.. ADULT establishments. There are at least 4 along that stretch of 82nd.
