A producer with the BBC has been poking around the bike scene recently. I heard she was putting together a story about Portland’s sustainability and wanted to feature something about bikes.
At first she mentioned wanting to talk with someone who makes their living by bike but I encouraged her to delve into the wonderful world of Portland bike moves. I sent her links to my reports and photos on this proud local tradition and she was instantly convinced.
We’re at a crossroads with the Jammin 95.5 situation and the community is choosing to venture down separate paths.
The choices are to either negotiate for a settlement and try to work with the station in good faith or to continue to protest by any means necessary until the tape is released and can be vetted by the authorities.
No matter how you feel, one thing is clear; the community response to this issue has already had an impact on the host and the station.
Stolen in North Portland. Blue Trek Navigator 300. full fenders. rack in back.

If you haven’t been in the presence of the inimitable Reverend Phil Sano than you haven’t really experienced Portland bike culture. Rev Phil is a self-described bike culturist who’s in the middle of many of Portland’s bikey subcultures.
In addition to being a regular at Zoobomb, Critical Mass, and the man behind many events at Free Geek (his employer), for the past three years he has devoted his energy to sharing and creating bike films. He has put on dozens of bike film screenings and he has produced several DVD collections including From Portland with Bike Love.
on the evening of Sunday, 16 July, between 5p and 10p on the
corner of NW Flanders and 6th Avenue (Old Town), someone cut through my
Kryptonite lock and stole my 2002 Felt F85 Road bike, top of the line
pump, clipless pedals, etc, etc. The F85 looks like the one below,
except mine had a straight bar handlebar set with bar ends turned down
in a way that emulates a road drop bar and the seat was an all black
LeMond. My beloved bike had a big bumpersticker on the right side of
its frame’s top tube that read MAKE TRADE FAIR in black block lettering
on a white background with OXFAM lime green highlights. Of course,
both the bumpersticker and the bar ends may have been removed (in an
effort to disguise the bike in an effort by the thief to avoid being
caught).
This bike was my primary transport, my exercise, my summer plans, my
ride in the MS 150 charity fundraising ride and my contribution to a
cleaner Earth. If you see it out there, PLEASE, let me know?

The BTA has just posted their new bicycle boulevard survey. It is important for them to get as much feedback as possible so please consider spending a few minutes to add your input.
The purpose of the survey is to learn more about your riding habits so they can figure out which streets will work best as bicycle boulevards and how they should design them.
I had my bike stolen this weekend. It was placed outside in my backyard along with 2 others. I have an 8’ cyclone fence with key locks all around. It was also cable locked to a large table. The person worked on the cable for some time finally cutting through. I was in Seattle with the band. My wife was home or at church Sun. morning. All three bikes were together as we were all going to go riding when I got back, mine was the only one taken. It was stolen last Sat. night 7/22 – Sun. morning 7/23. A Multnomah Co. Police report was made and I have somewhere in the house a number of photos of it. It was a custom built frame that I put together with the help of my friend. Value on it was $1,000 in rough numbers. I would have to price it out by parts on e-Bay as it is an older BMX/Mt. Bike style frame with more BMX style racing parts.
Here are the details:
26” Schwinn King Sting BMX Racing Frame (Black)
Chrome Forks
2 Mavic Wheels
2 Continental Smooth Road Tires
2 Black splash guards
Sturmey Archer Drum Brakes (Front brake only, Back w/ 3 speed gear shift)
Redline 185’s 3 piece cranks
Shimano BMX Pedals
TCO Seat Post w/ quick release
Haro gel pad seat
Redline upright handlebars w/ black grips
Redline 6 bolt stem.
Misc. other – hand brake assembly and gear shifts plus cable, water bottle and holder.
It is a large frame and very black with the exception of the chrome forks – we called it the black beauty. The sturmey Archer brake system makes it unique and recognizable. I will send you a pic when I find it. Thank you for your assistance.

As I mentioned last week, P.K.—the embattled radio personality for KXJM whose recent on-air comments got him into some hot water—went for a bike ride with a local reporter.
Yesterday, a commenter tipped me off that he talked about this ride on his show last Thursday. I just finished listening to the show via iTunes.
I’ve been without an off-road bike in my stable for way too long. This is a big deal to me because back in the day I used to eat, sleep and breathe mountain biking.
So last week, when my neighbor dropped of his old Kona MTB on my porch (he got something new and didn’t want it) a light went off in my head.
Why not just hop on it and race some short track out at Portland International Raceway (PIR)?
So last night I threw my hat in the ring and joined the Sport class race at Kris Schamp’s Mountain Bike Short Track Race Series. Kris puts on a great 6-race series that combines the woops and thrills of a motorcross track with technical singletrack in the infield of PIR.
